So i'm just thinking of moving to/working in the USA. I just wanted to know if anyone has any idea on what would be needed to get a Visa there, and if it's hard for us NZers? (Also if it could cost a lot).

Not sure exactly but an work acquaintance went and worked for the company that makes the software we resell in NZ. He got some kind of educational work visa. Was easier to get but almost impossible to extend. I think he was there for 2 years.

Have you considered marrying a US citizen? :-)

H1-B is the most common category for IT workers, but you need a company to sponsor you, and there is a quota system that means that you have to wait till the right time of year, and then get in quick.

An intra-company transfer (L visa) is also a good option is you have an existing employer with a US presence.

In both cases the company sponsoring you would normally use an immigration lawyer.

Have a look here for more info:

If you happen to be an Australian citizen you can go on an E-3 visa, but if you are any other country nationality you need to apply for a H1-B as the others have said, which will be about zero chance of getting unless you work for one of the big tech firms already.

Took a guy here (who married a US citizen and leaved hear for 5 years) about a year to get a Green card. I believe it's harder to go in just on work, unless its some kind of start up where it sounds like the rules are relaxed somewhat.
