Topic # 102956 26-May-2012 18:30 Send private message

Hey Guys,

I was doing a CCNA lab with intervlan Routing. The network topology is

x3 switches (1 vtp server , 2 clients)
x1 Router
x3 End device Computers
x1 Tftp server

Basically i setup everything correctly , the computers on the seperate vlans can ping each other.

But here's my question, should the switch be able to ping the computer's?
I was not able to ping a computer from my switch.

If it helps , I can upload the packet tracer file for it.

Cheers

THe switch's management interface is for all intentions the same as a computer ie you should choose a VLAN that it should reside on and give it an IP and the default gateway of that VLAN.

Yeah, your layer 2 devices are not configured to be on any particular vlan. You can ping between pc's coz you have your vlan trunking to your layer 3 device configured correctly.

ip add 192.168.10.2 255.255.255.0

repeat for your other vlans

yeah in the absence of a multi-layer switch the router is used for inter-vlan routing, ie router on a stick. The whole point of your lab. If your distribution layer switch is layer 3 capable you don't need a separate
layer 3 device. But in order to ping from a layer 2 only switch you have to assign ip addresses to the respective vlans.

I actually ended up finding what was wrong.

I didnt add this command on the router.

int fa0/1.99
encapsulation dot1q 99 native
ip add 192.168.99.1 255.255.255.0

now everything works :)
