Topic # 109953 30-Sep-2012 17:27 Send private message

I am interested in securing a .nz domain name that has not been renewed by the existing owner. I think they have not renewed it because they are no longer in operation.

There was a discussion on this topic on Geekzone more than three years ago, which I have read, and I wonder if that advice is still current, ie: use a New Zealand company such as Expired Domains to place a bid at the moment the domain name is released after the 90 day waiting period to maximise my chances of getting it. The earlier discussion is here:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=86&topicid=36206

Incidentally, the domain I am after is a org.nz domain rather than a co.nz domain, so there may not be the same level of competition or interest for it. Should I still use a third-party like Expired Domains? Or does registering my interest with them lead to the domain name being listed on their website thereby alerting others to its impending availability?

I would welcome advice from anyone experienced in sucessfully snapping up an expiring domain.

I would watch expireddomains.co.nz and other domain grabbers, but don't bid unless you have to. With any luck the name will drop and you can register it normally. As soon as you bid on a domain then it will show in the auction lists and will bring attention to it.

Thanks Noodles. I wonder if you could clarify for me from which of the dates below, the domain becomes available after 90 days.

Status    Pending Release
Date Registered    16:54 6/8/2006
Date Billed Until    16:54 6/9/2012
Date Last Modified    11:30 15/8/2012
Date Cancelled    11:30 15/8/2012

I'm confused because it was billed until 6 September 2012, but it was cancelled on 15 August. Which date will the 90 day clock begin from? Thanks.

Not sure, but strange it was canceled before the date it was billed to.

Per the DNC policy:

13.3 Cancelled domain names will be assigned a status of "pending release" and will not become available for reuse for a period of 90 days.

So calculate it based on the date it was cancelled.

FYI - the DNC policy in question can be found here: http://dnc.org.nz/content/rmc.html
