After a bit of a journey I'm now on VDSL ;-)  Day 2 and this is how it's looking.   Overall very happy!  Of course I can't resist any excuse for bit more tinkering, so:

I'd previously installed a master filter on the corner of the house closest to the road and put the modem in there too, so pretty much taken all house wiring out of the equation. The last 2 things I'm wondering is:
1) How likely is replacing the cable from road to house to make a difference (it's <10 metres)
2) Is the cable used to connect modem to master socket likely to make any difference?

Not too bad sidefx. We'll see how DLM treats you in the next week or so!

I think any thing you can do to improve the cabling can't hurt, although on short cables (<2m I understand there isn't much to be gained. Not sure about the cable from the street - anyone know if this is shielded / twisted at all?

In terms of my line; I forced a resync last night after 8 days uptime - no DLM profile change, I'm still stuck on DLM-2! :( CRC Errors are about the same as before - averaging around 5 per hour.

Yeah, I'm watching to see what DLM does with interest. Unfortunately the modem is plugged in right where my 1 year old son can get to it and he's taken an interest! He turned it off once today so will have to figure something out so he doesn't do it too much and affect the DLM...

As for the cable from the street it's a black cable, gel filled with 2 pairs and a fairly heavy duty sheath (was a pain stripping it when installing the master filter) Looks fairly old and I would guess is from when the house was originally built. Doesn't *seem* to be twisted or shielded.

sidefx:

Your figures look very similar to mine (sync speed, attenuation, SNR, etc) to when I first started.
I suggest leaving it for at least 5 days and keeping an eye on the errors (non-recoverable ones).

Is your line connection 'naked'?

Yeah connection is naked; I've switched to Voip for our home phone, which also seems to be running pretty well.

sidefx,

So your master splitter is still installed or not?
If so, does it have the TelePermit PTC285 sticker on it?

yes still installed, I didn't see a reason to take it out unless some says otherwise :-) It has telepermit sticker with PTC 285/09/003 on it

First DLM change last night; not quite what I was looking for but early days I guess.

I noticed an extra disconnection before 4am (the one at 17:06 was my son turning off modem at the wall)

Then found the the following setting was turned on. I'm pretty sure it was turned off previously; I've turned it back off now.  Not sure how much affect it would have, but I'm guessing any unnecessary disconnections are not good and it adds one every 24 hours.

Unsurprisingly as a result of the change downloads are up, uploads down a bit if anything, and of course latency up a fair bit (Yesterday it was very consistently 32.4, 9.3, 20ms)

Your latency figures have doubled from 8ms to 16ms between your two screenshots - that's a backwards step.

Mine started out at 8ms, now it's at 1ms.

Yeah, looking at the table in SamF's first post it's trying me on:
DLM-3 16ms 0INP

I'm wondering how much affect the 2 unexpected drops would have had; Will try to avoid any today.

Also, did you think it was worth taking out the master splitter? Given my setup now I know it's not really required, but I didn't see any harm in leaving it in. It is just one of these and has been absolutely fine on ADSL2+ for the last few months:

You could see if there is any difference by removing the splitter/filter IN A WEEK (let the DLM get more happy first).

And you said there was no other jackpoint between the splitter and the modem? Again, at a later date, if there was, you could check if it has any termination resistor or ringing capacitor and replace it with something else.

I'm not sure what effect that 'delay disconnection by provider' setting has. I have a suspicion that it actually stops resyncs from happening however - at least that seems to be what happened in my very limited testing. You will definitely get a resync with it off, I know that much.

Not sure why your interleaving latency went up, it's just DLM playing around and trying to find the best profile for you. You will notice you gained 3mbit in sync speed however. Don't worry too much about it, you are likely to be put down to a lower latency profile in future. My line did exactly the same thing, but eventually went down to DLM-1 (if only I could get back there!).

Don't stress too much if your budding technician is causing re-syncs. From what I've read this doesn't affect your overall results, but it is recommended that you don't force a resync of the connection.

IMO, if you don't need a splitter, take it out. The less you have between you and the cabinet the better!

OK thanks chaps;  I think I'll let DLM settle down before fiddling with anything.

That setting on the fritzbox will force clear the connection (resync/disconnect?) at a specified time. Apparently useful if you ISP disconnects you evey 24 hours period to select when that occurs.   Would seem to agree with my log above:

"If your DSL rate is not charged according to online time, select the option "Maintain Internet connection permanently". Then the FRITZ!Box is always connected with the Internet. If your Internet Service Provider clears the connection at regular intervals, for instance every 24 hours, FRITZ!Box restores the connection immediately. If the Internet Service Provider clears the connection at an inconvenient time, you can re-schedule this event for a more convenient period.
To do this, enable the option "Delay disconnection by provider to the period between". Then select the period of time
from the list."

TBH, if you're going to remove the splitter, now is the time to do it. DLM is monitoring the line constantly at this stage and it will adapt to new line conditions much more quickly compared to after the first 10 days when it will only change once a week.

If it was me, I'd take that splitter out now.

Bear in mind that DLM forces a resync between 4:10am and 6:30am daily (if it's going to).

Yeah, so I would guess looking at my log that the disconnection at 4:10am was caused by the DLM and then the tickbox in "Delay disconnection by provider to the period between" caused the resync at 3:39 - I can't see much point in that if snap doesn't periodically force a resync.

Hmm, good point on taking the splitter out... though on the other hand I will have no idea if it does make any difference if I take it out now; Though I guess if I really want to see in the future (or at some point in the future return to POTS + monitored alarm or anything like that) I can just put the splitter back in. So yeah I guess I'll take it out later today. And after that no more tinkering! :D
