Can others do some ping test to this server and post there results.  Any internet connection but this is form my VDSL connection. This follows on from the DLM profile discussions as I have tested on a DLM-1 profile and got 167ms so there is quite a bit of difference I am on DLM-2 with the 8ms latency.

You do realise it takes something like a minimum of 130ms to go from the NZ edge to USA to due the physical distance / lightspeed ?

130ms from memory it's around this mark though.

Well, the difference in latency to anywhere on DLM-1 vs DLM-2 shouldn't be much more than 7ms... other fluctuations will be due to other factors.

Return yes but not a one way trip that way be way to slow.  I checked on the southern cross cable website its about 65ms one way.

I'm on DLM3; Other west coast servers seem to give better\more consistent results too:

Errr, yeah, but you realise a ping measurement is the time taken for the trip there AND back right?

Yes hence why I said 130ms would be about theoretical minimum ping time.  But I believe McGee was saying it was 130ms minimum one way that is why I was just clarifying the minimum round trip is about 130ms going by the Southern Cross website.

Your link in the original post shows a Round Trip Latency.

65ms is presuming you're sitting at the SXC landing sites basically. You also need to include the contributions of the ADSL, switching delays for all the elements in the national path, distance associated with getting from your place to the start of the SXC, any interleaving, network contributions at the other end etc.

There's nothing dramatically wrong with the metrics in your first post. If you expected VDSL to speed up international latency then I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed.

Cheers - N

Hmm, 7ms or 14ms?  7ms makes sense but I ask because I saw a drop of ~15ms in local pings when I dropped from DLM2 to DLM3 (my ping on local speedtests went from 20ms to 35ms - very consistently)

Ah yes, you are right. The latency is both ways (I should have read my own post above before I posted that!! :D)

I'm guessing you guys are all in the SI, would be interesting to get some AKL snap users to post a comparison as that should take ~20ms off.

ADSL connection at home from another AKL ISP
