toastman2k: Snap's 30/10Mb UFB from Dunedin.... (A bit off topic but I don't think I've seen Dunedin UFB speed tests anywhere else.) I was looking forward to moving onto UFB partly because I thought it might give improved ping times. It seems as though yours are not far different from mine on Snap ADSL in Dunedin (interleaving off). (edit: deleted duplicate images)

one thing to note with comparing latency is that different browsers can show different results for latency with speedtest.net. like firefox seems to show lower than chrome. i think ie was lower still, but i'd feel dirty starting it to check! ufb is likely to generally-speaking lead to lower latency than ADSL, but what connection is being used from city to city, and various other things can also contribute to latency. Snap seem to have quite a low latency connection between Christchurch and Auckland, at least. On ADSL I've noticed that being on a cabinet tends to increase ping slightly. also depending on the application there can hidden latency increases from things like packet loss. diablo 3 for instance really hates packet loss - if you're getting 300msec+ pings you're probably getting packet loss. whereas if it's just 200 msec it's probably just the diablo servers, unfortunately blizzard is hosting on a tier 1 provider, and tier 1 providers historically don't peer giving increased chances of network congestion and packet loss. so you can lose packets near the destination, or near the source. each extra factor increases your chances of problems though. and ADSL often relies on forward-error-correction to "fix" noise, which having interleaving disabled reduces the effectiveness of significantly, whereas UFB should be more like having the interleaving setting. (you could still get issues, but less chance as less suspectibility to rf noise, crosstalk etc)

Just an update, well actually not really. Snap are compiling data to submit a full investigation to Chorus(?) or whoever. So nothing fixed at the moment and no ETA. I'm not trying to sound pushy, but it's been almost 6 weeks. I suppose it would have only been 4 weeks since Snap have tried to do something. They said it's at the highest priority and the issue is being handled by the chef technical officer (fancy!) First world problems I know...

Faster to Sydney than Christchurch o_O. Happy with all results so far. The US is horrible though.

I've heard a rumour, from another telco. Sound Snap about it a few weeks back but the story I've heard was different. I actually believe the rumour, but won't spread it. If Snap comes to the same conclusions then it will be interesting to see where Chorus will lead us.
