I really don't understand why all the hate for the ITU. All the things the naysayers are using to get people to speak out against it are ALREADY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW under the current management. A lot of them are being done by the same big companies that are asking you to stand up for them - spying, censorship, whatever.

The ITU does not want to ruin your life or your internet connection. Any government that does is already well capable of doing it, as anyone who has not been living under a rock for the last 5 years should be well aware. You really think having the US nominally in charge of it makes you any safer? I don't think so. The US government is perfectly clear that the US government will do whatever the US government wants to do regardless of whether the rest of the world agrees.

Which is precisely what they condemn others for doing.

So anyway, sure, support the free and open internet. Just don't presume that the ITU is evil simply because Google told you it was. Google spies on you 24/7 and will take down any or all of your fully legal content on a robotic whim. The ITU doesn't.

You're quite right there! Having said that, I do agree with the actual "petition quote" on the Google site:
A free and open world depends on a free and open Internet. Governments alone, working behind closed doors, should not direct its future. The billions of people around the globe who use the Internet should have a voice.
