Topic # 103189 1-Jun-2012 11:51 Send private message

So I'm in the market for a new phone, finally decided that my old HTC Magic is just too slow and my 45-year-old eyes are having trouble making out text on the screen without using my reading glasses.

At the moment it's a toss up between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X.

I've read comparison reviews and watched a few videos that showed them both in use.   One thing that stood out for me in what I've seen are some reviewers saying that the One X sometime lags a bit or pauses, something the S3 doesn't do.  I also saw a video where the guy was pinch zooming in on a web page and the S3 worked as I would expect but the One X seemed to zoom in and then reflow the text which looked a bit odd.  Also the One X's on-screen keyboard didn't look quite as good as the S3's.

I know that there's an update available (or soon to be available) for the One X, I'm wondering what things this fixes.

I'm on Vodafone, if that matters.  I'm not terribly interested in music or watching videos on my phone, a good camera would be nice but not essential.  More important I get a phone with minimal or no lag as I flick between and use apps (my old HTC Magic can take 30 seconds to go back to the home screen and redraw it!)  I would prefer a stock Android but I could live with TouchWiz or Sense I guess.

Also I'm a fairly heavy user of Google apps (Gmail, Maps, etc) but I assume that this isn't a problem for either phone.  And I guess GPS works ok on both (vaguely remember some Samsung phones having broken GPS)?

If no lag is your priority then the choice is very clear - Galaxy S III.

No problems with GPS on the S3, it's excellent with GPS and GLONASS satellite network support.

This is so true, I hated TW however the S3 implementation is nice and slick. The quality ogre the Samsung apps takes them to a new level. I would go as far as to say it is better than AOSP.

Back to topic you will not be disappointed with the S3

The Choice might not be so clear cut when you see you can get the One X from Noel leeming for $799

$40 difference, GS3 at Noels is $839

I'd go GS3, it's faster in almost everything, including games.  The cameras are about the same.  The battery life on first charge on the GS3 has obliterated the One-X after 6 weeks using it.

I'd actually say the GS3 is a more beautiful phone now that I'm holding it.  Previously I thought from pictures that it'd be cheap.

Until HTC can fix their battery life, and performance.  GS3 hands down.

You can order one now at the cheaper price and get it when they have stock. Wairau park is the only store I know that still has stock
