Well, I'd say the rumours are confirmed for sure now. I've even seen a video from Google advertising it and them talking about it (however I updated my blog post with it, only to have to update it a second time a few minutes later because they'd marked the video private! damn).

Specs:

"... the tablet has a 1280x800 IPS display coated in "scratch-resistant Corning glass," which we presume is of the Gorilla variety, plus a front-facing, 1.2-megapixel camera. Within its 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm case lies either 8 ($199) or 16GB ($249) of storage, plus 1GB of RAM, and NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 SoC. Connectivity comes courtesy of GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Micro USB, plus it's got NFC for all your Android Beaming needs. Rounding things out is a 4325mAh battery and the usual spate of sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, and a gyroscope." ~ Engadget

It won't be the most bleeding edge Android out there (but with a quad-core it will be right up there!), it won't be the cheapest either (look to random TradeMe imports for that), but for value for money it will blow the competition out of the water! (at these expected prices: US$199 for the 8GB, or about NZ$250 at the current exchange rate and 16GB at US$249 / NZ $315)

Yay, now found a duplicate of the original video:

Ha, I'm following the Nexus 7 a bit obsessively now as I'm watching live it be announced at Google I/O

Ahhh... Australia will be one of the first countries it is available from right now! I think I'll ship it to my Uncle's in Sydney and get him to bring it over on his next regular visit to Auckland. Also, those earlier prices I wrote down are now confirmed (yessss!).

Corning is the manufacturer for Gorilla Glass.

Sooo envious of all 6,000 people at Google I/O! As every one of them got a Nexus Phone, Nexus Q, AND a Nexus 7!

Too true! Good enough reason for us to become the next state of Australia? ;-)

Back on topic.... Engadget has got a hands on video of the Nexus 7 on their site:

The Android OS may be getting better but until Google demand every OEM uses stock standard versions of Google, and stops heavily customising it, the fragmentation in the Android world is only going to get worse.

Every recent model Android phone should be able to upgrade to ICS. Right now that isn't the case, and until Google follow the Apple model where IOS updates can be immediately be applied to every device I have to say overall things are getting worse, not better.

Even if OEM's want to continute customising their own version of the OS, the ability to use a stock standard Google version of Android allowing users to run the latest OS should be a basic core capability of any Android device.

I think this will be the ideal device to import yourself as customs only applies on products $400 and over. Thus you'd get this for $199 USD ($255 NZD) + Shipping. A very good deal if I do say so myself.

Hmm... it says $199 on Google.co.nz without any mention of it being US dollars. Does that count as false advertising?

+1 to this.
However, isn't that the good thing about Google devices? They are vanilla Android and get the updates first. Would be great to have a switch in settings to turn off Sense, Touch-Wiz, Moto-blur etc but I'm sure OEMs would resist because it removes a point of difference. I haven't owned any of the Nexus products sold in NZ. Are they at the mercy of the TNZ, VFNZ or 2D for their updates? I am assuming not, and in that way they would be like iOS.

Only problem is when you click pre order

"Sorry! Devices on Google Play is not available in your country yet.
We're working to bring devices to more countries as quickly as possible.
Please check back again soon."

Not really, because as soon as you hit pre-order it says "not available in your country". So there is no ability to complete the contract.

That price is definitely right. Microsoft and there surface could have learned from this launch, oh look its available right now!! (well not here but elsewhere) Not in >4 months time..

Now to find somewhere that ships internationally for a reasonable price..
