TheUngeek: Yike's this thread grew since I last read it..... So the only way to get stuff onto this thing is via WiFi and Bluetooth? Any guess's as to the GPS performance of it? One of the key functions I'd like one for is navigation File transfer by USB too, of course.

Oh, did I miss read the stuff about non USB storage? I thought non file transfer via USB? Or is it just file transfers but can't play from a USB? I should not be here

Yes, without rooting it can't access an external USB source as a storage device. I intend to load mine up from my PC's hard drive by the USB cable, that's for sure!

I got into the full Play Store no problem, saw an ad urging me to download the movies and tv app, then saw this: The message changes too, depending on where you access the store from, then changes again if you use a credit card issued in another country. If you buy an Australian phone or Nexus 7 the message you get says the item cannot be installed in your country. If you use an Australian IP, the message then pops up if you try to use a NZ credit card. My Samsung Galaxy S2 was bought in Australia. Google allowed me to get free books on it but stopped me anytime I wanted to buy any. Conversely, I was able to install Google Books on my NZ phone and download free books while I was in Australia but cannot access them now that I am back in NZ. The whole thing is plain stupid.

Stupid indeed - especially since the Nexus is supposed to be a Fire extinguisher. I for one will be relying on Kindle for my bought books, Calibre and Aldiko for the rest. Just as you pointed out that it's most likely the carriers at fault for tardy OS upgrades due to their having an implicit financial incentive not to, so here I'm sure the real fault lies with content rights holders. Doubtless Google would take our money with glee were it allowed to do so by the content providers.

I'm thinking you'd get without the gst which would take 10% of the $320 AUD price, ending up around $360 nzd. Or you simply buy it in the shops, don't open it and claim the gst back as you leave the country. How? Slightly off topic but related. Just got myself a GoFlex Satellite 500G WiFi HD media server (for my Nexus 7) Normally $200 plus around $230. But I did a straight swap for a sealed Iomega 1TB NAS Home Cloud HD. These are listed at present for around $340, I actually bought this at PBTech for $205, just before the Thai floods. So I considered it a fair swap, but here's the crazy thing, later in the year I am off to the US for a trip, and there the Iomega is selling for $97US say $105 after sales tax /.78 = $135NZD. Thats is $200 price difference to the $340 quoted here!

I had assumed we would not get the Nexus 7 in NZ, because we don't have Google Movies, Books, or Music. For a device based around consuming media, we only have 1 out of the 4 services google provides. This is why I'm encouraged to learn that it is coming here. To me, selling it here would only make sense if Google planned to extend its Play market here too. Selling its Fire extinguisher globally then hobbling access to content seems to make little sense. Just up at St Lukes and checked with JB HiFi, Dick Smiths, and Noel Leemings. If you want one you had better pre order, because with the number they are each getting I can see someone buying all stock then putting on trade me for a higher price. St Lukes JB HiFi getting 12, Dick Smiths getting 4, (350 for whole of NZ due HQ 30/7/12), Noel Leeming getting 4, will only get more if pre ordered. So if you want one pre order which all 3 are taking now and all expect last week in July.

When I went into my local Noel Leeming (Hastings) the rep told me their allocation was 4, so I'm fairly confident of getting one. You definitely won't rgret getting an S3 either, I love mine! :)
