stuartjmz: I just rang The Warehouse and she found the full specs for the Huawei Mediapad, definitely running Honeycomb

Upgradable to ICS dude, Huawei had their official (not test) update out ages ago.

AFAIK a "test" version of ICS (for us, not our mums) was released a month or so ago, you can find it here

Thanks. I'm looking to buy one of these for my wife, and although I've never used Honeycomb, it sounds like one to avoid. She will want an "it just works" oobe, so I was hoping for ICS pre-installed.

Why don't you install it for her then? It's not a test build...

They updated their ICS build last on 29/06:

Yes, I will. I made the silly mistake of replying before reading the link, and that "for us, not our Mums" had me thinking it was an unofficial build - I didn't want anything that would even technically void a warranty, but updating via Huawei will be fine. Thanks, and sorry for jumping the gun.

Looking through the XDA forums for the MediaPad last night it looks like you can install custom ROMs with Root out of the box in the same fashion as you can the official Huawei builds! I see they have released their open source code recently, wonder whether someone like CdTDroid can compile Jelly Bean for the MediaPad? If that happens then the Nexus 7 starts to look a little like a bad joke at it's NZ pricing...

Even with ICS, if the special had been on when I pre-ordered my Nexus, I would have got 2 of these instead of one Nexus

Darn: "Google's 16GB Nexus 7 tablet is sold out just about everywhere."
http://mashable.com/2012/07/22/google-nexus-7-sells-out/

heh, Mashable failed at telling the difference between CPU and GPU! (it is a quad core CPU, not 12 cores which is what its GPU is)

Not good at all for a tech website....

I'm going to be in the States in mid September this year. What do you guys think my chances of just walking into a store and pick one of these up will be by then? Any other suggestions?

Would the US style charger plug be the only thing incompatible with NZ?

Cheers

You should have no problem at all in the USA.  Also was just in JB HiFi St Lukes and they had 4.

This could be a good way to get it in NZ?

As google tells me:

299.63 U.S. dollars (that includes shipping) = 378.846883 New Zealand dollars

Which is cheaper than any of the options listed earlier for a 16 gig one:

I think you might be just a tad optimistic on the exchange rate, I usually find after Visa and Bank service fees take 2% to 2.7% off the exchange rate, so I reckon 0.77 is closer to being realistic.  But that only make it $10-12 more say $390.

Yeah true, I'm just quoting what Google (299.63 usd to nzd) gives at the top of the search results.

But I noticed when I ordered my HTC One X last week it was another 10 bucks more or so than I expected from Google.

Is there anywhere overseas that we can order from that actually has them in stock?

Dear David,

You requested to be notified when we received stock of the Google Nexus 7.

We are emailing to confirm that we have already received some stock but are due to receive more of the 16GB model before the end of the week.

We only have a handful of units arriving due to the demand for this product, so stock will not be available for long.

In addition we realise that our price is higher than has been advertised but it is necessary for it to be viable for us to sell the Nexus. Most importantly however we can ship outside of the UK to markets which the Nexus 7 might not yet be available.

For more information or to order one, please click the link below.

http://www.clove.co.uk/nexus-7

We will send another update once stock of the 8GB becomes available or we are in a better stock situation.

The Clove Technology Sales Team.

Oh well.....  I think I've basically decided anyway I shall instead pick one up in a couple of months when I visit Australia.

Just purchased mine from http://www.mobicity.co.nz/ and added the TYV10 coupon and total came to $339nzd with free shipping for the 8gb version.
The nice thing about this is that they charge in NZD so no CC conversion rates.

Hope I don't get stung with GST.

Anyone had much luck with getting the $25 credit on an already set up NZ Google account?
