It is nearly always not quite what one thought. Yes $199 US dollars, but in Australia that is on Google Play pre order for $249 AUS dollars for 8G model (read in web review), and I suspect additional shipping of $20 AD to a Aus address. Exchange rate say 1.30 so that will be $350 NZD. Does not look quite so good a price and that is without onward shipping costs to NZ. The $249 AUD price is just what I read on the web can anyone confirm cost for 8g model and shipping cost to aus address? Cheers Peter

I'm still very interested to know of sites that sell general purpose prepaid credit cards for US sites, given that a Nexus is substantially more than the $25 gift cards featured on that site. Well I have taken the plunge and pre ordered a nexus 7 8G model, as with all of you no doubt agonised over the biggest short coming no micro sd slot expansion, and then again over whether to go for the 8G or extra $50 for the 16G model. Conclusion: Whilst at home not a problem as content streamed from home media server. Travelling upto 64G with OTG micro usb cable and reader, or tether to phone. Or if whole media collection required buy a seagate goflex satellite 500G HD. You are wondering how I have ordered this, well I have advantages of having jumped through these hoops before for my nexus one phone. I first tried HideMyAss proxy did not work. Went to VPN Authority and signed up for their trial. Configured VPN connection. Connected to Google Play and ordered, but wait not that simple because you need a US address and phone number. I have a Shipito account and have used them several times and can recommend them. As has been mentioned their main base is Torrance CA with 8.5% tax, one should go and setup a Oregon address as no sales tax. This option only became available early this year But I already have a CA address with them and had mine sent there (I will try and get and Oregon address and try and change the shipping address on the pre order as it will save me $17.41 US in tax). Payment: Now I remember for my Nexus One phone I in Google Checkout (now Google Play) I used the Shipito address and my NZ Credit Card, and at the time it did surprise me that shipping address was not restricted to the credit card address as are many sites because of fraud. But it did not, I can not say if this is still the case. For my Nexus 7 this for me is not a problem as when I was in the US in 2010 I opened a Wells Fargo account giving my shipito address with a spare $200 dollars, and in July last year transferred $5,000 when we where 0.86 cents to the USD. costs: Nexus 7 $199.00, Tax(CA) $17.41, Shipping to US address $13.99, Total: $230.40. Add shipping by Shipito: recently bought Panasonic TZ30 camera (here $700 NZ dollars cost me $389NZD to buy and import) package was under 2lbs weight was with shipping and shipito fee was $50 USD I expect similar for Nexus. So costs all up $280 USD for me at 0.86 thats $325 or 0.80 = $350 (hope to save extra $20 if I can avoid CA Tax) Ordering from Aus looks like AUD $249 plus $19 shipping then add Aus post to NZ say $30 thats say $300 AUD @ 1.30 = $390 NZD So it seems to me if Google will accept a US shipping address and phone number and a NZ credit card and use shipito Oregon is the cheapest way to order and would cost around $330 NZD to do. Shipito offer's assisted purchase: If you don't feel comfortable paying online with your credit card we can shop on your behalf and purchase what you need. You will send us money by wire transfer, once we have received it we will purchase your selected products. The cost of our assisted purchase service is $8.50 (plus cost of purchase, sales tax, shipping). You can then use the same company to ship the item to NZ - for a cost of course. Even if OEM's want to continute customising their own version of the OS, the ability to use a stock standard Google version of Android allowing users to run the latest OS should be a basic core capability of any Android device. You keep banging on the "Fragmentation " drum like it means something...seriously, the Android handsets in their various guises are doing just fine out there in the market place, right across the pricing spectrum, so I'm not sure what your point is. If you're not interested in Android other than to run it down, you should save posting here and post in the apple section instead.

The one complaint I semi-have of my recent move from iOS to top spec Android is that people in other countries have had "factory" ICS for months and yet there is no sign of me getting it any time soon. This isn't running Android down for the sake of it, it is a weakness and that is a fact.

This "fragmentation" meme is out of control. The 59% of market that Android had in recent quarters says phone buyers - mainly - don't see "fragmentation"......they see choices. Lots of choices. They buy the one that suits. Please don't cure "fragmentation" because when you do you've killed choice. Choice is what makes Android better. If I wanted limited choice and to be dictated to by a vendor I'd go buy an iPhone or a WinPhone. If you're not curious, your brain is already dying...if not dead.
