janszoon:
loconz: Awesomely powerful unit!
I installed a few graphic crunching games to see how it went.....very smooth
The 7 inch unit means I can use it for navigation in my truck and have found the google nav better than the tom tom (which cost more by the way)...I might add here that google nav knows where the destination is better than any other but is still a bit weak in getting there.

As a commercial driver who also designs software, I can slip between navigation/email/the web/server status and my online books without any delay.

Downside is that I have to keep it on the net by connecting to my phone (Wireless Access Point)...one day I forgot my phone.....the world stopped.

I found the 7 inch would be as big as I could go for the portability I need in my daily schedule.

Is there an app or 'way' to show when a call is coming in on your Mobile....but message displays on Nexus 7 ?

like a caller ID / call indicator app or something? over bluetooth I suppose.

cheers.

Hi guys, new to this site and not very tech knowledgable, I apologise in advance! Cool

Just bought the Nexus 7 2 days ago and really impressed with it. I don't know what rooting is (in the tech sense Wink) so I think I will skip that process knowing that I would only get it wrong!

I read plenty of reviews about this device and as I have never owned a tablet (or even a phone that gets online) I was looking forward to all the goodies it is advertised with. I was somewhat dissapointed to find that I could not get into Google Play or the so called pre-installed stuff wasn't! In any case, I was impressed with other stuff it did and worked around a few things like downloading the kindle app for reading books etc.

My main question however is this; How do you transfer files from your PC?

When I connected to my PC (running windows Vista) the drivers downloaded and the nexus icon appeared in explorer and I was able to drag and drop a PDF and a movie I had converted for Android. The only problem was that I could not find it on the nexus. When I looked under 'storage' it was obvious the files were 'on' the tablet but not to be found anywhere!

i'm not even sure if in fact the movie would run adn whether or not I would need a sperate app for this?

I did manage to email the pdf to myself and save it but could not move it to the Adobe app, in other words it is stuck in downloads as a result of the email save where I can access it but it would be more convenient to have the document sitting in Adobe.

Any help with this?

Cheers.

Hi, have you tried installing a file manager/explorer, I use Astro, you say you cannot use the play store, have you got a gmail account, you wont go far without one (as I understand it)

Cyril

Edit, here is Astro and here is ES as recommended by mark below

You'll need to install a file manager. I recommend ES file explorer.

Thanks guys, I will try the file manger.

I do have a Google account but it appears that we, being NZ, don't have access to the Google Play stuff from the Nexus as I get the message pop up that it is not available in our country.

Hi, I think that is correct for some movie/music stuff including the material that was offered as packaged free, hence why we dont get it here, there is a thread going about that with regard to N7's sold via DSE were they stupidly advertised that info then withdrew it.

Thanks, you can't acces the Google Books and Google Movies which seems to be a shame and without explanation. I wonder if they just rushed it into the market here without much thought...

The file manager helped although, being a novice I don't know how much I can achieve. It did help me with sorting the pdf files and it's a better way to be able to find out where stuff is going so thanks for that.

Another 2 questions; Do you need some form of security for tablets when you are browsing the net etc. or does the nexus come with software to minimise/prevent you being hacked?  (sorry if that is a dumb Q.

I was able to dowload a movie which I had converted to the Android compatible format and thanks to the file manager was able to find and play it however, 2 things I don't like/can't change; Firstly, I can't get it to play horizontally and secondly, you only view a small letterbox in the middle of the screen!

Any ideas about this? Do I need to download a movie playing app?

Cheers.

Sorry, I have answered my own question about the movies by downloading an app called mvideo player and it is working very well.

Still wondering about the security question though.

If anyone is interested in where to purchase their Nexus, as I've seen a few posts about this, then I can tell you I got mine from Harvey Norman in Glenfield on Friday and they had 8 in stock. Bond and Bond had none and Noel Leeming said that they had them but didn't have any on display and weren't for getting one out for me either!

I got this one from eBay and am loving it. It is not as bulky as the one in the video above and the stand functionality seems better also.

If anyone is interested in a hard cover, I bought one from trade me and it hasn't Been opened yet. It wasn't what I was looking for and made a mistake buying it but if it's what you want then I will sell for $15. Basically it's a shell casing that clips onto the back so no protection on the screen. Quite a popular cover amongst iPod users. Trading under hagey1

Hey guys. I'm having a problem with the charging on my Nexus 7. I'm aware of the problems people have had using non standard chargers - in my case I have and am exclusively using the oem Asus usb wall plug and oem Asus micro usb cable.

My Nexus will only show charging when it is turned off. I'll plug it in and the battery logo will come up on screen to show it is charging. If I turn it on (leaving it plugged in) when it comes on it will show that it is no longer charging. The only way to get it charging again is to turn it off completely and then to unplug/plug in the usb cable or turn off/turn on the wall power. The rate it is charging also seems to be very very slow. Maybe only up to 5% an hour.

Prior to experiencing this problem the Nexus did shut itself down due to low battery. The battery is now up to 25% but the problem as detailed above continues.

Any ideas?
