Topic # 107541 14-Aug-2012 12:44 Send private message

Hi  - any pointers as I am missing something and arrived at the grrrrr stage.

On my PC at home I have Google Talk installed where I can invite my Gmail Contacts for voice chat.
So I just don the headphones - Click the contact - click the phone symbol and chat over wifi.

So rather than be limited to cord range of headset - I'd like to be able to do this from my cellphone.

Yet on my Android 2.3.6 phone  - google talk appears limited to IM chat with no voice chat.

Thing is all the stuff I have read on google talk indicated this feature was implemented with A 2.3.

BTW - I am only seeking to talk on phone to my gmail contacts via Wifi when they are connected via wifi to  cell phone or PC. I dont want to call local exchange numbers

Voice and Video chat doesn't work on all handset models.
Google Talk is an extension of Gmail chat which expanded to Google+ chat, and it's not 100% unified as it could be.

It would be nice if google combined all of talks voice, video and text features together, with Google+'s Messenger (previously huddle), Google+ hangouts and possibly Google voice even.
It's all a bit disjointed considering how they could bring it all together.
eg Video chats can be made into public hangouts instead of one to one, google talk conversations can easily be made into "huddle" like chats with multiple people (that actually works, multiple person conversations in talk are a bit dodge), where you can share pictures etc.

Perhaps it's in the pipeline.

Yes all very disjointed, Google have been going in lots of directions, google+ could tie everything together nicely but while facebook dominates that, they seem keen to not erode established stuff like youtube, voice, gmail and picasa and etc etc
It will probably come together, but only over time. Innovate/consolidate is a constant cycle.

What phone do you have? Basic question sorry, but do you have a front cam?
See if there are listed requirements for the app.
Another basic, but is the talk app up to date in the Play Store?

What handset are you using? Mine was on 2.3.4 and could do video chat quite well through the GoogleTalk app.

Well here's one step:

Hangouts in Gmail
Video chat has just been upgraded to Google+ Hangouts.
You can now video chat with up to nine people at once, watch YouTube videos together and more.

Just got hit with that after logging in to gmail, it says its on G+ for mobile too, but I thought it was maybe already.
