The only contacts I want on my phone are the 120-ish individuals and companies I phone or email on a frequent basis. I have them in a Google/Gmail contacts group called "phone". This is the group I select for display and they are the only contacts I see.

But Contacts seems to insist on downloading ALL Gmail and Google+ (they appear to be integrated at the Google end) contacts. That amounts to about 10,000 people I have corresponded with at one time or another since 2007.

The Contacts database is about 120MB of my 1GB internal app storage. I can go and clear it out.....and get the space back, but the next time it syncs, it downloads all 10,000+ contacts again.

I guess I could keep the people I want in my phone - physically - and just ensure they are also recorded in my Gmail contacts.....but that seems to reduce the value of the cloud.

Anyone else annoyed by this?

Looks like I'll have to go through my Gmail and Google+ and get rid of a lot of people (a big job!).....or switch to a new Gmail account for the phone that has much less history associated with it....and no Google+ contacts. Or....export all my existing contacts and import them to another "archive" account...and wipe out most of them in my main account. That way, at least, I retain my Google Store purchase history on the correct account....and I keep all the contacts (in a safe, non-syncing place).

Can you not go into contacts, contacts to display and then settings customized list and then choose the ones you want?

I can....for display. But whatever I choose for display it still seems to download the whole world (whether I have selected them all for display or not).

Sense on an HTC phone makes it even worse as it seems to want to make its own copy of all this and is contantly asking if I want to "match" 20 or 50 or 120 users (at a time) and will happily chew up 75% of my battery in 3 hours syncing 10,000 names over 3G if I forget to turn sync off after clearing out the data. My habitual response is "Dismiss All".

I'm seeing this Contact database obesity on an LG and an HTC phone....so it appears to be a Google / Android thing.

I probably just have far too many contacts. But sh*t happens across 5-6 years ion which I have been involved in a variety of organisations in NZ and overseas with a need to contact most of that 10,000 at some point or other in those years.

Yeah, I'm peeved by this also. I only want the contacts I've added - that is why I added them! All the rest that Google have decided I need can piss off! I have some people showing in my contacts on the phone up to a dozen times because of this! VERY annoying.

semigeek: Thanks for the link. It definitely helped with Sense on my HTC Sensation. Still poking around on the LG.
