Hi All, Time to ask a 'simple' question as in 'What is the simplest way...'. In this instance my better half has just gotten a new Android, Samsung Galaxy S since you ask. She has a private Outlook account on the home PC which she loves, she uses all the folders and such and for some reason just really likes Outlook. She now has a gmail account but really prefers Outlook. So, what is the easiest way for her to access her email on her phone? Preferably this solution would have the Outlook user interface or whatever the mobile version is, the 'if all else fails' solution would probably be forwarding to her gmail account. Is Outlook.com an option? Is there an Outlook app/client for Android? Is there a better option? The key word her is 'simple'. This is for me as I'm not tech and I'm going to have to set it up. Outlook.com works really well in the browser. You can also use the Hotmail app from Microsoft: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hotmail.Z7 Devices: Samsung Captivate (AT&T Galaxy S) and HTC One on Telecom. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

Who is the mail provider now (that she uses in Outlook)? Outlook is just a mail client, and there is no 'Outlook' as such for Android. Twitter: ajobbins

If you specifically like the look of Outlook, there is software you can purchase called Companionlink that retains the colourful appearance of Outlook. But you can set up a (free) 3-way sync between Outlook on PC, Google Calendar (cloud) and the calendar app on the Samsung. Works perfectly with my Galaxy S3 (if you don't let Google Calendar dictate when the public holidays are!).

If the provider is using Exchange, and the user likes Outlook, I'm sorry to say Android is not for her. If the account is on Exchange Server you will find out the ActiveSync implementation on Android is flimsy. Seriously, every single Android device I've seen does one thing different. Not a single device using the built-in accounts manager synchronises (on schedule or push) folders other than Inbox. Some Android devices do not synchronise calendar entries, while others do it pretty well. I found only one device that would synchronise Task, and even so marking a Task item as completed on Exchange would not propagate to this Android device. Actually, it would propage FROM the Android device TO Exchange every single time after the initial sync. This means tasks marked as completed on Exchange would appear as incomplete once that Android device synchronised. A pain. If you want PERFECT Exchange reconciliation, multi folder push synchronisation, then get a Windows Phone. Or an iPhone. OK, look I'm not really a tech type of geek and I have never needed to know more about Outlook than how to turn it on, so... how do I find out who the email provider is? As far as I know she set up the account when we bought the PC years ago, I like my gmail account so I use that. Sorry for asking such a simple question. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Is this at home? Would she be using the ISP email servers? What's the email address (after the @)? So the Hotmail app in Android will work with hotmail.xxx domain address, any live.xxx domain address or any private domain address that is using Windows Live domains as it's email handler - i.e. anything where Microsoft is your email provider. It actually addresses the issue freitasm mentions above and will allow you to flag other folders to be sychronised and will also handle you having multiple calendars (displayed in the standard Android calendar app). All in all, it does the job a darn sight better than activesync does on Android in my opinion.

We are on Telstra and can't remember if we had some arrangement with them. It's been web mail for me since the 90's. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

First, no Hotmail Android doesn't support Office 365 - just tested. Back on topic. If it's a @xtra.co.nz address then Outlook is running as a POP email client, not as ActiveSync. freitasm: Does it include Office 365 accounts? If yes, then I am all for it! Actually I suspect not, but I don't have one to try it with. It seems to be based around Windows Live/Hotmail. You could try it and see. It's a free app. Oh you just did while I was typing....

freitasm: Does it include Office 365 accounts? If yes, then I am all for it! It did last time I tried it. It's not the prettiest looking app but it does the job. We're all using Galaxy Nexus's (Nexii??) now with 4.1 and the stock Exchange implementation seems to work really well for us. Some people are running custom ROMs based on 4.1 like Cyanogen and that works just as well. But back to the issue at hand, the stock Samsung email app is actually decent enough, it supports folders etc and will work well with an @xtra.co.nz email address. If you're looking for a little more fully featured app then K-9 Mail would be worth checking out. Devices: Samsung Captivate (AT&T Galaxy S) and HTC One on Telecom. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.
