northover: Well....if that is the case then the 8gb nexus will fall below the $60 threshold assuming the cost of Youshop is only $17.25 (up to 500grms)
Duty calculation
DescriptionRateEst. dutyOriginal value 299.00
USDNZ$ value0.81369.14 NZDFreight NZ$ 17.16
NZDDuty0.000.00
NZDGST(val+dty+frght)59.44
NZDSub total 57.98
NZDIETF* 0.00 NZD

 Estimated cost: 0.00 NZD

Unless you're 1000% sure the you'll fit fin in the 8GB, it's not worth it. Remember, on a 8GB phone you have about 4GB free space.
Enough to cache a few songs a few maps, plus app cache, and it will be full.

I'd rather pay the 600NZD, including taxes for the 16GB:)

Why only 4gb free?
my ancient Nexus One only has 0.5gb and a 4gb sd and i have never managed to run out of room. As previously, I dont store lots of music, photos etc but I would be surprised if 4gb of the Nexus 4's storage is already in use. Where did you see this?

Based off the Nexus 7 I expect 5-5.5GB to be available to the user on the 8GB model. If you play ANY high quality/intensive games you're likely to struggle a great deal with that limitation.

On XDA someone touted 5.42GB free space on 8GB model, not ideal when a nandroid backup can consume over 2GB

The tasty new Nexus range does challenge me though, could i live with a small capacity device and better embrace cloud storage? I have Dropbox/Box/GDocs/GMusic, I have sufficient data allowance on my plan to live in the cloud not to mention plenty of wifi at home. In reality I probably could live with a 8GB phone but doubt i would buy one willingly lol

Has anyone tried to purchase the Nexus from play-store yet?

I have VPN'd in and the site has changed slightly in that the "coming soon 13th Nov"  Has now gone but still unable to buy the nexus.

However you are able to purchase the Nexus 7 only.

Not sure what is happening??  It is the 13th in most of USA but not the west side...Perhaps that is the issue.

May appear for purchase soon hopefully

What sold out? The US one is still "coming soon"?

Is the Nexus 4 sold in Australia exactly the same as the one sold in the US? Will they get updates at the same time?
