SlingshotR6: What's the story with power cables for phones purchased in USA?  Assume they'd have the US plug configuration and be 110V??

I have a US Amazon microUSB charger, and it is 110-240v so you should be alright. Even if it is 110v, any other microUSB cellphone  charger (except iPhones) should work.

droopanu: prezoom asked me for the value, when I got the Nexus7. I could have declared anything :)
As for the NZD390, prezoom's calculator is estimating that the price will fall under the threshold, and they won't charge any taxes ...

Have u used prezoom before - are they reliable ?

Shipito are very reliable and as mentioned earlier in this thread shipito also let you declare the value of your shipment......hhmmmmmmm ;-)

oh k , thats handy, so we can declare something to be under $400 and it wont cost the extra gst - is this correct, has anyone tried this method?

Used them once. Some issues with the payment for the shipping. Managed to hit their fraud-detection system, but all fixed, and no further complains.
Delivery was quick, under a week.

You can declare any value you like but whether customs believe your declaration is an entirely different matter.
I haven't tried declaring anything other than the true value.

What happens if the customs catch on? Any fines, or do they just charge the extra?

if custom do not believe the price they will ask you to show the invoice with the price and how you got it so cheap, and if they can see a new phone is nz$450 as the standard price and they not happy with your doc you provided, they will choose the RRP - and as they still have the phone you either got to pay or let them send it back to sender.

So, in the worst case, we end up paying the same as when we declare the right value :) right?

Don't forget that the cost of shipping is also included in the total cost.
Go to: http://www.whatsmyduty.org.nz/
This may help. The trouble I have is whether our not the internal USA
Postage is included in this amount or just the YouShop postageto nz?

I'd argue that the internal US shipping shouldn't qualify for GST as it's not a service that's being conducted in NZ.  I understand why the US to NZ freight is included, because that service is at least partly conducted on NZ shores.

Well....if that is the case then the 8gb nexus will fall below the $60 threshold assuming the cost of Youshop is only $17.25 (up to 500grms)

for custom website http://www.customs.govt.nz/inprivate/sendingitemstonz/warnings/Pages/default.aspx

There are heavy penalties for concealing dutiable goods from Customs and for making false declarations.

When purchasing expensive items overseas, such as jewellery and electronic equipment, you may be offered a false receipt showing a lower purchase price. This is intended as a way to reduce Customs charges. Do not succumb to these temptations.

Concealment of dutiable goods and the presentation of false documentation are serious offences which may result in the seizure of the articles and substantial penalties. You may also be criminally prosecuted.
