Yet another cheap tablet thread. They have a special on for $360 for an ipad like (very ipad like) tablet. Looks alright, but has anyone had any dealings with Penta or any experience with their product?

Is it worth the risk. You can pick up slightly older gen ipads for not that much more, and at least you know the ipads work well.

That is the question. Parents in law are looking to buy one for their son and the spec looks ok to me compared to some of the dross that is out there, but it is impossible to gauge feel and build quality without going and having a look. Maybe will go do that this Saturday. At least the website has lots of details and contact info compared to some fly by night e-sellers.

Still they do not list source code or rom downloads. At the very least they need to make android kernel source available.

Gee, that spec looks good. Impressive bty capacity.

Free shipping, too. $NZ352. It would escape GST, too, wouldn't it?

Penta (NZ) Ltd is a NZ registered company (#3769863) with a local address (from website) and the majority shareholder residing in Auckland, so any prices should include GST unless otherwise stated. "Escaping" GST is not possible/relevant.  Some prices I saw indicated GST included and others made no mention.

Here is a review on one. Doesn't look like the same model, and can't even be sure it is the same brand, but it is using the same name. But looks a lot thicker than an ipad. http://tech2.in.com/reviews/tablets/bsnl-penta-tpad-ws802c-review/328772

My comments referred to the tablet referenced in the post by kobiak above mine, not to the Penta one.

I'd go for a nexus 7 or 10, second hand tablet, or a more common cheap brand eg. ainol

Some of their tablets just look like generic A10 devices

Who set that as the answer? Will see what the deal is tomorrow if it is a good enough day to go for a drive with my daughter and will report back after that.

Someone else obviously felt that was the best answer. But you would definitely want to see it first. How do you know they have a retail store that is open with stock to show? You may want to contact them first to check.
If they are getting it for a son, they should also probably ask them what they want. An ipad mini could be another option, as they are very cheap. The thing about apple over andriod tablets, are there are a lot more apps for them, and schools will also tend to use apple ipads and ipad apps, which will make an apple device possibly more relevant. But I still like android especially on phones, but I don't think it is the best tablet OS yet. Even a windows tablet could be an option, but they are still expensive compared to an ipad, due to them only just being released. If I was going for an android tablet, I would probably go for a nexus, which is comparable to the ipad mini.

Yeah.. but there is still a mind shift between $360 which feels like a bargain and $440 for the nexus/$480 for the ipod maxi. They also may be technically better, but they are way to small to get anything done on. A 10 inch is bad, they would be worse.

Tried to find the place and could not. So it is probably just an office somewhere rather than a retail space. Also not sure if mum in law ever got a reply from them. So this gets resigned to the who knows pile for now.
