A search of Geekzone has failed to turn up any solution for the "mono-only" FM radio in the SGS, so I was hoping some knowledgeable person here might have a link to a fix.

Any help gratefully received.

There's a suggestion that Froyo will provide a fix, (but who knows when Froyo will arrive... wouldn't surprise me if Gingerbread beats it onto the Galaxy S :D ) so I think I'll try a home baked fix if there is one.

Cheers,

Froyo firmwares do fix that problem R2 (I think from JPK upwards if memory serves). Even with the fix you'll need reasonably good reception to get stereo though.

Second official Froyo release date has been announced as 11th November(prob 12th for us)

Will be interesting to see if they've updated the lag issues...
Samsung Galaxy S Forum recently published the final launch date of the Froyo upgrade for Samsung?s famous smartphone. Turns out that the Galaxy S will get Android 2.2 on November 11th, after Samsung pulled the Froyo update files from its servers because of system bugs.

Is the update likely to be released OTA, or only via the dreaded Kies.

<rant>

Kies is possibly the worst piece of programming I've ever seen - it makes Norton Antivirus seem positively nimble by comparison, seems to be completely random in deciding whether it wants to recognize my SGS, and just generally makes me want to spontaneously break furniture when I use it.

Upgrades are only by Kies. you can do unofficial updates using Odin and flash leaked firmware. There are a lot of custom roms appearing on XDA forums these days.

Yup, as Lokhor said, only through Kies...maybe that will change if indeed Samsung do indeed release the Nexus 2 details(apparently the i9010) on the 8th but we'll see

Odin is far superior to kies, I flashed the official 2.2 in kies, then went over to Odin and flashed root + voodoo through Odin

Hi guys,

Could someone please confirm if the following is a bug on 2.2 or just part of the App2SD feature/function:

I recently upgraded to 2.2 ZSJP8 (Hong Kong with traditional Chinese firmware), and downloaded Angry Bird (which supports App2SD). When I added the app onto my home screen (Touch Wiz UI not the Defualt android home screen), upon rebooting my device, it disappears from the home screen. Further investigation reveals that Angry Bird was saved onto external SD by default. Once I moved it back to internal memory, the problem is solved.

So is this normal that any app that is saved into the external SD which has been added to the touch wiz UI will disappear upon rebooting the device?

Thanks

Thanks for the info NZtechfreak.

Am I right in thinking that JPK is an "unofficial" FW that will require some jiggery-pokery to install? Or is it simply a matter of loading Kies onto my PC, plugging the SGS in and crossing fingers?

Thanks again.

JPK is an unofficial firmware and very old. The latest leaked firmwares are JPA and JPO (for different regions) it's quite easy to install once you realise how simple Odin is to use. You do need to backup all of your apps using something like titanium backup though as it works best after a factory reset.

Yep, I'd advise against trying to go anywhere near Kies, Odin is the way to go. I'll probably upgrade to the official one when it comes, but I'll use Odin for that too.

...and yes, JPK is old. Install a newer one if you're going to flash, the updates since JPK haven't really added anything to make me want to flash my currently beautifully stable Galaxy S.

I don't think the icons should disappear when they've been installed to SD, but then I don't use TouchWiz, so I couldn't be certain (LauncherPro Plus FTW).

Haha yeah LauncherPro Plus is great.

The good thing about the newer firmwares is the custom roms and themes available such as the Doc_Kalpik JPO/JPA rom that has a bunch of addons (e.g. default lockscreen, circle battery thing in notification bar etc)
You can find it here, there's a pretty extensive guide on how to install it and once you read through and understand it's quite easy.

Played around with the Telecom Galaxy S today. Beautiful screen. Very nice, however... seems really really light, like it could easily get away on me.

What cases are people using that give it a bit more weight but without taking anything away from the looks of the phone?

As expected it isnt "Quad Band 3G" Virtually all handsets are Quad Band GSM (2G) and only a few like the iPhone 4 and the Nokia N8? are Quad Band 3G.

I'm using a slim rubber style case, haven't dropped it yet...being light is actually a positive in my view, the iPhone 4 feels like a brick to me now, SO HEAVY!!!
