Damager:

What cases are people using that give it a bit more weight but without taking anything away from the looks of the phone?

I got a couple of these ones, in different colours.  Fit really nicely.  I also haven't dropped (or nearly dropped) my phone.  It's too precious to be careless :-)

I have a Case Mate - Barely There on its way to me.
Not sure it will add much in the way of weight but at least it will solve the problem of the stupidly slipperly back cover.

Thanks VinnieG, Neets, fahrenheit for the recommendations. They all look good!

Perhaps it isnt the weight after all, but the slippery back that gave the impression it was overly light for me!

rfast: Noel Lemmings back ordered stock are rolling out today apparently!!

I wasn't aware there was a shortage. When I bought mine, DSE Sylvia Park, NL Sylvia Park and Bond&Bond Botany, (AKL), had half a dozen or so each. They were also available at Vodafone and First Mobile Sylviia Park. Almost a glut you could say?

Not that they were expecting them to last, but they all indicated that stocks were being updated continuously. I know that not everybody lives in Akl but I don't see why other main centre branches of these chains wouldn't also have them in stock. If an SGS is on one's radar, then I don't see any problem, (and I also believe ParallelImported has good stocks at somewhat discounted prices).

I doubt very much the the SGS will ever be out of stock anywhere again. And excellent news that is. It's a terrific phone. Loving it, even though I can't use Swype for nuts, but I will keep on practising.

Right-oh...

This isn't quite as easy as I'd hoped, so I'm on the scrounge yet again.

I'd appreciate a link that has the latest Odin and 2.2 XX(whatever) that common wisdom recommends for noobs such as myself. From what I can glean from the intertubes on the matter thus far, there will be a .rar file to download containing whatever elements I will require to backup, restore and flash as needed.

So far I have had 1 download that wasn't a legit .rar file and another that had a very early Odin version for an even earlier Android version. So there's some hooks in this process, I'm thinking. Not expecting to get this done without some pain, you understand, but the progress so far suggests there may be much pain if I don't get some guidance. If there's somebody who's able to help ease the pain, your help will be most welcome.

Or it's back to Google and the crapshoot that's looking to be.

As always, assistance is much appreciated and will result in unimagined positive karma. Or maybe not. But I'll be saying kind things about the contributions, if that helps.

Cheers,
R2D2.

That's a bl**dy decent discount, if that's what NL were selling them for. Dang. Could've used that saving myself. 8>O

Oh well.
Guess I'll shop about a bit more when replacement time rolls around.

Out of interest, what is the problem you are having with Swype? Are you maybe lifting your finger when you are selecting the letters? I let a friend try swype who isn't a tech person and they managed to get it straight away.

I've grown used to using the Mk1 eyeball to hunt and peck my way around physical keyboards on sundry Nokia phones, so the keys are only obscured when you actually press 'em. With Swype, a goodly number of virtual keys are obscured by the swiping digit, so I find myself having to plan a word (especially with punctuation) in advance of swiping it, and/or memorising the position of the keys.

I'm not having a b!tch, mind you. Time will fix this and although I'm slower on Swype than on the E71 or E63 keyboards, I have gotten faster. So it was a mea culpa - I'm taking longer to overcome my physical keyboard bad habits than I anticipated. I actually like Swype and am persevering. Honest.  :-)

Poo.

Was going to update a post above but there's no edit button - suppose there's a time limit. So, sorry for having to post again.

Found another update.zip on the interwebs and this time succeeded in the rooting process, if you'll pardon the expression. Downloaded one click lag fix but haven't installed it yet.

Any caveats I should be aware of?

Ta in advance to any helpful souls responding.
Cheers,
