kiwijunglist: Also within 15 minutes of running froyo i have lag when using the messaging app, 2 secound pause. :( also lots of lag when swiping this is really awful. i hate samsung.

Right then, no good reason to move off the Doc_Kalpik ROM I've installed.  I don't have any lag fix on my phone because there's no need for one.  The ROM is super quick, not perfect, there's the odd app that once in a while hangs a second or two, but it's a rare event.

Linuxluver:
kiwijunglist: how do i set default launcher in froyo. homeswitcher no longer works and I can't find the option to clear defaults under settings -> manage applications.

EDIT: nevermind figured it out

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> View All -> TW Launcher -> Clear Defaults

That works....or sometimes a quick way is to install another launcher and then touch Home....it will offer a choice of launchers....and you set a new default. Then you go to the Market and uninstall the launcher you used to provoke the switch option (so you can install it again when you want to provoke the switch again).

I keep an *.apk for a launcher- whatever - handy for this reason. It's faster to open a file manager and install that than waiting for Manage Applications to populate so i can scroll waaay down and clear defaults. :-)

Or just get Home Switcher!

Neets: That's right, it's been mentioned on the Whirlpool and XDA forums.  The backup of your apps from an Eclair build doesn't work with Froyo.  You can install the apps, but not the data.

No it's fine to restore third-party apps and data, just don't restore system apps and/or data.

After a bit of drama with Kies this morning, I now have 2.2 on my phone. Before the update, I put a copy of the whole phone memory on to my computer. To put the back-up back on the phone, do I just copy and paste all of back-up files to the phone's internal card? i.e. including the file called Android, or should I copy all the files except for the Android file?

Sorry - a wrong tangent here. I was under the impression from earlier posts in this thread that the upgrade to 2.2 would delete the data from all of my downloaded apps. This also was what happened last time I up-graded to a newer version of 2.1 using Kies. Stupidly I asked the question above without actually checking what had happened on the phone during the 2.2 installation.

I am very pleasantly surprised to see that not only are all my apps intact but all the data has been saved as well. eg. all my three-star completed games of Angry Birds, my saved places in Co-Pilot etc.

Maybe Kies aint so bad after all.

That's good. It's using Titanium Backup that doesn't handle restoring a previous backup of system data between 2.1 and 2.2. So have you experienced any lag?

try dealextreme / focalprice both based in hongkong and offer free postage. They sell car charger including windscreen holder/cradle for about $10 or less.

Launcher switcher seems to work fine and it's free.

thanks, that's good to know. Although the need to switch launchers no longer exists as you no longer have to be running touchwhiz to use the usb connection.

I was wondering how everyone else is getting their froyo update? If you are using the reghack to get UK froyo will this work with a Galaxy S purchased in New Zealand (Vodafone)?

Thanks for any input.

My phone came from Clove in the UK. It is a virgin (i.e. unrooted) because I was not confident enough to do all the rooting/Odin/flashing/ROM stuff etc to get lag fixes, ad hoc OS upgrades and so on. I was quite happy to wait.

Today after a bit of unsuccessful mucking around trying to upgrade Kies, I deleted it and downloaded and installed from fresh the latest version (1.5.3.10103.100), which recognised my phone and immediately told me an Android OS upgrade was available.

Thus I downloaded and installed Froyo using Kies. Kies kept all of my contacts, my downloaded apps and all the data for those apps. I did not need to reinstall anything from my own backup.

After all the to-ing and fro-ing and discusions in this thread I was quite apprehensive about all this but it could not have been easier or simpler. I'm rapt - my phone has Froyo and no noticeable lag now. Brilliant.

What I am not sure about is the extent to which Samsung may have fixed Kies' problems in the latest iteration - they may well have because it worked so well..
