kiwijunglist: Desire HD  (from what I've read)
+ Made by HTC
+ Better camera
+ Larger screen 4.3"
- Too large for some pockets?
- Currently sold out

Galaxy S  (from my experience)
+ Amyloid screen
+ Fits better in pocket
+ Faster GPU
+ Better external speaker / ?better audio?
- Crappy software support from samsung
- Comes with kies
- GPS is a little dodgey
- Camera is a bit crappy
- Lags a lot unless you install lagfix

If you don't mind the large size I would pick the Desire HD over the Galaxy S.

No issues with my camera on my SGS

most things should load pretty much instantly when you click, you shouldn't get any pauses, eg. if you try and drag the location bar down and get a pause before it drags that is lag. with lagfix sometimes i get 1-2 secound pause. I think that froyo actually lags more than 2.1 now. Will have to either try the custom rom or add voodoo again.

No issues with camera, it's just not good enough for me. I expected better. Looking at the test shots for Desire HD it looks like the camera is a lot better. I'm not expecting it to replace a proper camera, but the photos it takes are just 'ok' when viewed at 1mp or less (20% or less zoom), if you view at 50% zoom they look bad.  Low light performance is unuseable even for facebook.

My camera seems a lot faster on JPP and the GPS finally gets a fix!!! I'm happy :)
The other "official" build from last month was laggy and had GPS issues

Mine seems to be not lagging yet, since Friday, so hopefully it stays that way.  All apps are reinstalled

I'm beginning to think there's some specific combination of factors that are responsible for the lag you experience. As I've written before in this thread, I can't honestly remember experiencing any lag at all with my SGS. Bear in mind that I came from Nokia E63 and E71 so don't have a lot to compare to. Nonetheless, I certainly don't notice hesitation of the sort you describe, and don't remember any such behaviour in Eclair either. So I'm thinking that the lag thing is something far less than universal. Or maybe I'm charmed?

I haven't been following your travails so I'm not au fait with what remedial action you've taken to resolve your issues, but drawing a parallel with Macs and PCs, maybe it's time for a 'wipe and install' or whatever the smartphone equivalent is. Or maybe you've already tried that and it hasn't helped and I should just STFU.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you find a solution. I doubt very much that I'd keep the SGS if I was having the experience you are. Good luck.

Cheers.

PS: Agree with you about the camera - it's only acceptable in conditions of high ambient light, something that I think is less to do with the sensor and optics than the software that decodes and processes it. Hopefully some clever dude/dudette will make a hack for that as well.

ThinkFree Office? Free with every SGS (assuming you don't install the slim version of Doc_Kalpik's ROM) :-)

Yep, it's the slim version.  But I'm sure I took the zip file so I could pick and choose (remove apps) which extra apps I wanted to install.  So I take it ThinkFree works ok?  I've never used it - which is why I didn't care it wasn't included .... until now ;-)

Yes I had a quick try before I posted :-) You could just save as txt/docx files and then import those, or you can select and cut and paste from ThinkFree to the browser if you need. Saving separate entries in separate files may make life easier. I must admit I don't usually use ThinkFree for composition, usually just for reading email attachments (for which it is essential).

I'm on stock JPM Froyo with no lagfix and I only get lag in the web browser on heavy content websites which also tend to have flash loading. I even keep my phone on for 10+ days without rebooting and it doesn't slow down like it did on Eclair.

When you upgraded to Froyo, did you try wiping the device completely?

Something isn't right if you say that your Froyo is lagging more. If I drag down the notification bar, it's smooth as every time.

I know what the lag looks like as I had Eclair with the lagfix installed and I don't see it anymore. The device isn't quite as snappy as it can be with a lagfix but it still isn't a slouch.

I still tend to complain though as I know the hardware can do much better :) It's not bad in it's current state though.

Lag depends on how many applications you have installed. The default RFS filesystem suffers greatly from fragmentation/corruption

@caldazar Nope didn't do any wipes or resets, just upgraded to 2.2 via kies. Even if i do factory reset, wipe data etc, i still don't see it being as fast as something running voodoo lagfix. Definitely seems like 2.2 without lagfix is slower than 2.1 without lagfix (caveat: I probably have slightly more apps than i did back when i was running 2.1 w/o lagfix)

Terrific, thanks for taking the time to try, and reply :)  I'll add the app back in and give it a whirl.  I use the Wordpress app too, so I'm hoping it's a fairly simple copy from ThinkFree and paste into the "Post" page of Wordpress.  Cheers!

Since Upgrading to 2.2 swype is capitalizing the first letter of the second word in the first sentence (for example this one). Anyone else seen this?

@n95 yes I have the same problem. I tend to just ignore it.

Not happening here. Although I installed the Doc version which might help explain that.
