I took the advice of another member to download Tasker which I'm trying to fathom. If you don't RTFM for that app, you're lost almost immediately. Intuitive it isn't. So that's my bedtime reading now. Difficult learning curve, but it's like learning a new computer language so once you've got it, it all becomes clear and unleashes lots of power. I think. I hope, actually... Laughing

Wish me luck.

Cheers,

Ahhh, now that's definitely Linuxluver.  I was tempted to download as well and then spend next week in Q'town teaching myself how to use it.  It sounds like it'll do everything, which means it's not going to be a simple app to get your head around.  I shall stay tuned to all updates.

Let me see now... you're in beautiful Queenstown with your SO, (possibly one of the most romantic places on this Earth), and you're contemplating learning a scripting language?

Hello...?

You really are a geek, Neets. Laughing

Well if you're determined to learn Tasker, you can teach me when you're back in ChCh. Seems like a plan.

Cheers,

Haha, he's used to me being absent (even when I'm present).  Did I mention my 4 hour run on Saturday, and there'll be a 4.5hr run in Queenstown on Sunday.  He's the best husband out there (IMO) and Queenstown is his favourite place (in the world) to holiday.  Honestly, he'll be so happy that I'm not restless and itching to drag him out to do something energetic.  But I will drag him out for some Mountain biking Wink  You'd see him at the pub, beer in hand, relaxing, soaking up some rays and chilling out.  I'm not into any of that!

We're both afraid of heights, which is what is freaking me out about doing the Kepler Challenge.  I don't have a head for heights and you're on a knives edge up there.  The luge is about as "adventerous" as I get.

I use Handsent for SMS. For a couple of weeks note I've noticed theres no audible notification. I have tested the notification and it works but it doesn't when a live text comes in. yes, your're right, I don't get many texts if I haven't wrought to question until now. I have the latest update of the app and it has worked correctly before. Any suggestions?

This and the previous post sent using swype. And I didn't proofread.

While we are talking apps that aren't working as expected, has anyone found Meridian stops playing the album after about 3 songs? Its happened numerous times and on different albums.

I'm looking for a few opinions -

Is it a good idea to replace an HTC Desire with a Samsung Galaxy S ?

I currently own an HTC Desire (rooted etc), and am very pleased with it. A friend recently got a Galaxy S (on my recommendation) and I have had a play with it and been impressed.

I am well aware of the lag problems, and the fixes. But what impressed me is the better battery, slightly larger screen, better screen, better sound, lighter & thinner, accelerated graphics, wifi direct and misc stuff (tv out etc). Not so impressed about no camera flash and weak GPS - but they are minor?? concerns. Anything I forgot?

Anyway, am I just being foolish to consider this? Has anyone else done just this - what are your impressions?

Related question: is there a Galaxy S that will work on both Telecom XT AND Vodafone/2 degrees ? (Im not super worried about high speed 3g internet access, I use wifi). Where is that available in NZ?

Thanks.

GPS update.

Getting a lock indoors at ~15 seconds, which ain't bad I reckon. Used the LbsTestMode settings to make a couple of minor tweaks but I think the most useful thing was tapping the 'Delete GPS Data' button. Basically satellites began popping up immediately after that and the tests show >5 and up to 10 satellites seen, up to 7 with a signal >20.

So I am happiness filled.

If anyone wants my settings, post and I'll put them up. Having seen very little in the way of complaints here, I'd say most are already happy enough with their GPS, so I won't be surprised if there're no takers. Good-oh then... Smile

One step closer to the perfect phone.

Cheers all,
R2D2

Unhappy with gps & camera. GPS is nothing like the desire/nexus one. I would consider the Desire HD as well as Galaxy S. If the Desire HD came with a 4" screen and the same or smaller body size to Galaxy S I would grab it in a heart beat. You'd be better sticking with HTC if you can handle the large screen/size.

With regards going from Desire -> Galaxy S, I think it's not a big enough difference to upgrade, I would either get Desire HD, or wait another 6 months and then upgrade.

Nope, it was me. Tasker is the mutts proverbials. Get on it now! (hope you're not a visual person, those two sentences may bring an unwanted image to mind)

Good luck R2D2, you won't need it, you'll get there eventually! I'm still learning as I try to achieve news things with it, the number of other softwares you can replace with Tasker is just stunning!

kiwijunglist: My galaxy has a crack in the top corner of the glass. Not sure how out it happened. Maybe sat on it in back pocket.

I think lag fix makes a huge difference, but I have never tried oclf or any of the market lag fixes, I've only used the ones you have to instal via the recovery menu.

Back pocket and Galaxy S = Broken phone - probably within a week. :-)

Yep. I walk to work most days. It's about 9km each way, so I listen to the tunes from my phone via bluetooth and Meridian. Meridian will be set to random and repeat forever. It usually craps out a couple of times in the 1:20 it takes to get to work (or back). Often after receiving a txt.

I've wondered if the Galaxy S is tuned to kill apps after a certain amount of time if you don't interact with them. Meridian lasts longer if I pull the phone out of pocket, unlock it, bring meridian to the foreground and then re-lock it. My Nexus One did not behave this way. The Galaxy S does.....same app. Well....a few updates later, but Meridian has behaved this way on my Galaxy S from the day I got it.

I use the paid version of Meridian.

I also have the Lithium Player which I think is *seriously* cool....but it doesn't seem to support the button controls on my SONY Bluetooth stereo headset.....so I use Meridian on the longer walks because I can drive the music through my headset without touching the phone.

I'd be curious to know how people who have a lagfix get on  with Skype.

When my Galaxy S is logged into Skype, the phone lags like (wait for it) a one-legged drunk climbing a sand dune in a hurricane during an earthquake.

No Skype = No lag.

I was reading about Skype on Android the other night actually - the consensus is that while it's generally just bad on Android, it's a complete abomination on the SGS. . . . Cry

Fring seems to be one viable alternative?
