I like PEBKAC, can't remember where I picked that one up - it comes from the IT helpdesk industry doesn't it? Yeah it's an old helpdesk joke... sometimes used as a response to tell the customer what the problem was. The customer goes away believing PEBKAC is some highly technical term and don't question any further. I know of a couple of people who used it on occasion... but that was nearly 10 years ago :)

Right, despite it looking like there'll be another ROM with Doc in a few days I've upgraded from v6 to v8 with a full battery. I've wiped the battery stats. Now to see how the battery stats perform. At this stage I've got no lag fix applied (removed, rebooted, applied upgrade) but the 3 tweaks (not the Misc) - which I left on during the upgrade. Battery life is exceptional when the phone is left idle. 5% in 8.5 hours (can't believe I slept that long). However in the hour that I spent catching up on XDA, Twitter and FB it drained a further 15%. I know Kalpik and others have mentioned the poor battery life when the pone is in use, and it appears to be somewhat of a mystery. So, like many SGS owners running on stock JH1, I've taken the plunge and rooted with RyanZA's Z4Root app as a first step towards flashing a new ROM. I'm still a little confused about backups though, particularly the difference between Nandroid, Titanium and ClockworkMod; what I'd ideally like is a complete image of my phone as it is now (JH1+Apps+Data) in case it all goes pear-shaped (I can get into the 3-button recovery fine). I'd also like a more granular backup so if I do flash a Froyo rom like the Doc Kalpik ones you guys use, I can just get Apps+Data if need be? I've just installed Titanium and it seems to only do System+Apps, so what's the next step? Life is mostly froth and bubble, two things stand like stone - kindness in another's trouble, courage in your own. SGSIII ROM: WanamLite v1.3 Kernel: Ninphetamine v1.1.0 Modem: DXLEA SGSII (Now belongs to SWMBO) ROM: WanamLite v12 Kernel: Siyah v3.3.2 Modem: BVLPB SGS (Cat's chew toy) If you need a download-mode jig ASAP, you're welcome to borrow mine! Works with SGS I/II/III. I also have a SIM cutter available (Dunedin) - happy to post either to you at your cost.

If you are upgrading from 2.1 though, its best to do a factory wipe as restoring apps from 2.1 on a 2.2 rom doesn't work too well. As for data you can just store it on your sdcard.

Titanium: Backup all user apps - will include the application data. Nandroid backup is a behind the scenes backup like you'd get if you opened RomManager and took a backup from within RomManager. One is sort of kicked off similar to like a dos prompt type behind the scenes, the other is from a nice UI (RomManager). I believe a Nandroid backup and the RomManager backup are the same thing, they're just started from different views. Nandroid and RomManager (which is ClockworkRecovery) are a snapshot of your entire phone. So that's the OS and programmes (if we liken it to your computer). Titanium Backup isn't the entire OS. But it is of the applications and the user preferences you've customised in those apps. The system data is (and I'm a bit shady here) the apps that are part of the system, like the Samsung apps and other apps that come pre-configured/included with the phone. And I'm quite happy for people to correct me where I'm wrong, or to put a more techie spin on it. You should also take a backup of your /efs. Since you're rooted you can use a program like root explorer to take a copy of the folder and put it on your sdcard. It's just a folder called efs sitting in your root.

Was gonna buy a different mount, however I needed a micro usb car charger, and they cost atleast $5 USD so thought might as well get the mount as well. So I've installed Rom Manager, and told it to flash Clockwork, picked Galaxy i9000, and it's rebooted, and is sitting at a screen saying: 'Replacing stock recovery with ClockworkMod recovery' It's been doing this for 40 minutes now? ??? Life is mostly froth and bubble, two things stand like stone - kindness in another's trouble, courage in your own. I never encountered this. Do you see the yellow bar having moved (from left to right)?, or the progress bar is spinning? When I clicked the ClockworkMod at the top I don't recall it did anything except get the latest version of it. I had to specifically click the "backup" option before it looked to do anything. None of what I'm saying is at all helpful though. I'm not sure what to suggest since it seems from what you've described as if it's doing something, yet it's clearly not. I havent had that either, I'd try to just install CWM through recovery.
