@nofam - what you said doesn't make sense. But don't try and install voodoo if you are already running a different lagfix.

Neets: @nofam, Have a look at this thread, I've just started reading but it might have something here for you>

Many thanks Neets - I have the Voodoo lagfix enabled, and it seems CWM isn't compatible with that?  Can anyone confirm this for sure?

Will disable it, and have another go at installing CWM from recovery (although I suspect it will work from ROM Manager once I disable EXT4)

So not only does having an EXT4 lagfix cause issues, even having an update.zip in your sdcard also stops it from working. . . .

Learning slowly. . . Smile

I didn't use Voodoo, but I did have an update.zip on my internal SD and had taken a backup from RomManager while it was on.  I hadn't taken a backup while I was using the lagfix I had which did put some parts to EXT4.

Still, this was after having gone to Doc's ROM where the kernel already supports CWM.

First, wonder what happened to the post screen html - I'm seeing markup instead of the usual formatted text. Eerie...

I'm not sure what you mean about update.zip preventing lag fix from working. Are you talking about a specific issue with a particular ROM? I ask, because I have ext4 working fine with lagfix (oclf 2.0) and I sure as heck have an update.zip file in the root of my phone's sdcard.

My ROM's in my sig.

One question guys. I just read the review of the galaxy S in the Nov PC World and they mentioned that they were disappointed in the speech quality of this fone. I have a Samsung Eternity from 2008 vintage and it's a great fone to use but the speech is crap. Now I only use it for SMS or as a backup..

What are your experiences with the speech quality on the S.??

Sorry for any confusion; as stated before, there's a known issue with the Voodoo lagfix preventing CWM from installing.

I disabled Voodoo the usual way, rebooted back into my standard JH1, and attempted to do a backup with CWM.  I got past the install stage, but then go the following error:

(Note the terrible spelling below is not mine!  This is word-for-word)

update media, please wait ...
update media, finished
    # MANUAL MODE #

-- Appling Muti-CSC...
Installing Muti-CSC
mps_dat value: VNZ
multicsc : can not acces to /system/csc/VNZsystem/
copy_common_data

From what I could find online, this was caused by having an update.zip in my sdcard; sure enough, once I moved the update.zip (which happened to be the Voodoo lagfix), it worked like a charm.

My next question is, can I find the CWM backup using Root Explorer, and copy it somewhere so I can view it from my PC and copy it right off the phone (or at least to the external sdcard)

I'll answer for myself - never had anybody complain about the sound quality of the calls, and it's certainly nothing you'd experience for yourself unless you leave yourself voice messages from your mobile from time to time. Possible I suppose, but I can't imagine why I'd do that...

Or do you mean text-to-speech? Which is indeed crappy, but easily sorted with an after-market TTS replacement engine. Like I did with Svox.

Or maybe you mean something else and I'm being more dense than usual tonight?

Cheers,

For me at least the backup was stored on the internal sdcard under Clockworkmod\backup. You can copy it using root explorer or just plug in the usb and grab it off in windows. I got a copys on my sdcard and HDD.

Right. If it's actually an issue (and it beggars belief that PC World actually have an objective testing procedure), then it doesn't appear to be universal. In fact your post is the first criticism I've heard about, and there have been many areas that the SGS has copped criticism over, as you're no doubt aware.

Then again, maybe I just missed the critiques somehow, and I will now ask peeps I talk to if they notice any sound issues. Worth knowing anyway.

Cheers,
R2D2

My dear husband hasn't mentioned any problem with me yakking on the phone.  He now tells me there's been a problem when it's not been convenient for him to talk at work (ahhh, gotta love him!).

I've also called numerous times using a Plantronics Discovery Bluetooth headset and again, quality has been really good.

Like R2D2 (hi - where have you been hiding?) said, no reports I've seen about the quality of voice being a problem, or sub standard.

Thanks Wazz/Neets - we like easy! :-D

Next question - just reading the pre-requisites for Doc Kalpik, and it talks about having the 2e recovery. . . .I've read the faq, but I'm still not too sure what this is?
