Haha man I'm glad I don't have to deal with people at Harvey Norman or Vodafone. I ditched Vodafone for 2Degrees a while back, best decision ever (in regards to mobile operator choice).

kiwijunglist: there is an international example of the 3 button mode being disabled on this phone, and then people complaining that it meant the phone was subpar and then samsung re-enabling the 3br mode. Search the web maybe you can find the story.

The details are on the Samsung Facebook page.  If they're publicly announcing it on a social network then I'd say that's pretty good evidence of an apology for disabling a function the phone was intended to have.

Has anyone got their head around the corruption-issue with Doc's Roms?

I've just been through the forums, and it has my head spinning - I'd like to reapply one of the lagfix options for the XXJPO v7.6.2 I have installed, but should I flash XXJPO v8 first?

lokhor: Try following Kalpik's post:

I think my main issue here is my lack of understanding about what makes up the different components of Android:

- Kernel
- Firmware
- ROM
- Modem

Etc etc

Indeed - hence my reluctance to go messing about with things when I've only just got my phone back in working order.

My thoughts at this stage is just to ignore the warnings for now, keep doing regular backups, and I'll eventually sort it in a future upgrade.

JPO w/JPP modem seems fine to me at the moment, although I'm finding the lag annoying, hence my desire to put NO-RFS advanced EXT4 back on.

Apparently just flashing the ROM twice will resolve the problem.  So long as you're using a ROM with the good kernel (k9 and higher).  But if you're staying on a ROM that's got the problem that might corrupt the /system, then you need t follow Kalpik's instructions.

Likewise, what part the kernel plays in the OS I'm unclear of too.   And I also want to apply the NO-RFS advanced EXT4 lagfix, it's a good one and the phone still needs it.

- Kernel
- Firmware
- ROM
- Modem

Etc etc

"Kernel" is the copy of Linux that boots and runs the rest of the software. It doesn't include the system files (all the files under /system etc). It includes a small RAM filesystem containing enough software and configuration info for it to start up the main system. You can replace the kernel without replacing the rest of the software on the phone, if it's compatible of course.

"Firmware" is a generic term for anything that gets flashed to the phone.

"ROM" is a misnomer for collections of software that people publish for Android phones. It clearly isn't "Read Only Memory", but it seems to have stuck. ROMs may or may not include kernels.

"Modem": the phone has two CPUs, one is the general-purpose Application Processor and the other is the Call Processor. The Call Processor has its own software that does all the 2G and 3G voice and data handling. The software that runs on the Call Processor is called the Modem software. It even responds to AT commands like a modem.

"PDA" is what Samsung calls the operating system and application software on the phone, i.e. Android and apps. Confusingly sometimes all the PDA, modem and CSC files are bundled together in a single file.

"CSC" is carrier specific code which is an overlay on top of the PDA code that can change applications, add branding, etc.

Can anyone who purchased their handsets from NZ distributor post up their details for fw versions please. Thank you muchly. :>

It looks like it's a hardware fault (from what I've read) which is fixable with a fw upgrade. I'm just trying to figure out how my fw is different to those who have it enabled.

I've heard back from Harvey Norman. Well actually I called them and asked to speak with a manager. He asked me to bring the evidence of the fact that other handsets in NZ come with enabled recovery function. Kiwijunglist had sent me two links in which Samsung Canada state that there is an issue with my JG9 version of firmware, but if people update to JH2, the recovery function will be fixed. They also state that if the firmware is JH2 but the recovery function isn't working, then to take it to an authorised dealer to get it fixed. The problem with this, is that it's a Canadian Samsung Facebook page. The guy at Harvey Norman stated that they can't do anything about it, if Samsung in fact do disable this function. Basically I'm going to see him tomorrow with print outs of statements from Samsung Canada and go from there.

So maybe if someone can provide their details and version of fw via pm, I can take those with me tomorrow to show that other people who purchased handsets from for example Noel Leamings, have in fact this feature.

I know for the fact that ALL New Zealand retailers use the same distributor - Brighton. So basically this guy from Harvey Norman is happy to send my device to them, but if they recognise that the lack of this function doesn't have a bearing on functionality of my phone, then they will charge me for it...

It's a royal pain in a** I tell you. :(

Tbh if I knew I was going to go through this nightmare, I would never have purchased this device.

My phone from telecom came with I9000TDOJJ1 firmware. It had both 2e recovery and download mode.
Not sure if it falls under the same category though as it is from a telco.

Cool - that gels with my thinking on it too; so if I decide to flash Doc's XXJPO v8 over my current XXJPO v7.6.2, I need to flash the k9 kernel first as per the instructions?

I'd happily provide the info if I could remember what the ROM was, but it was Eclair and it seems a very long time ago.

However it was from Bond & Bond and the 3B trick worked for both download and restore (download, because I pushed the down vol button by mistake Embarassed), a working 3B being something that was recommended in an XDA flashing ROMs thread. Or here in this thread maybe. Hard to recall now.

I'd be very surprised if B&B and NL didn't get their SGSs from the same distributor, so it would seem odd that some phones would have 3B and others not unless perhaps a particular phone was faulty.

But who can say?

Cheers,
R2D2

I believe that the 3BR was discontinued after a certain batch # in the production of the i9000's. This includes all variants of the Galaxy S. I saw this somewhere briefly in the XDA i9000 forums on XDA. Can't remember exactly where though :(
