lokhor: SuperOneClick can root 2.2 stock. I think you have to flash an update.zip to get 2e recovery. do you not have 3 button restore anymore?

I have the std 3e Sammy version with their limited menu of options. I really feel the 2e 3B recovery is a must if there turns out to be a good reason to flash into a modded ROM, and I don't have root right now as the old standbys don't work with this stock ROM. I'll try SOC and see if it gives me back root. Is that a market app or a side load from XDA Devs?

Cheers,

Hi All - noob question time.

I have a Telecom supplied Galaxy S running 2.1 and am trying to update to Froyo using Kies (it sounds so simple).

When I try to update the firmware I get a message saying the Device firmware cannot be updated (this is using the latest version of Kies)

Do I need to apply the registry fix to Kies to fool it into upgrading me to 2.2 as per

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628

is my phone capable of the "3 button download mode" or is it locked out by Telecom / Samsung?

Thanks in advance..

Matt

You'll have to try it and see, but I got mine from Telecom and it worked OK.

Thanks for the reply Plasmadog - if it doesnt work (i.e. the 3 button download is not enabled) whats the worst that can happen?

ArtooDetoo:
Plasmadog: Has anyone found after updating to Froyo that they now seem to be in a different Market region? I have a Galaxy from Telecom and updated a few days ago, but now some of the apps I had (and paid for) are no longer available in the market when I search from the phone, but are still there when I search AppBrain on my PC.

Yep. Whereas I needed Market Enabler to see Navigon prior to the update, I now see it in both AppBrain and the Market app without Market Enabler. But to be fair, I was using a Doc ROM previously and that's a Western Europe based hack so in my case, it figures. The number of available Samsung apps has dropped from 7 to 5 as well.

Cheers,
R2D2

Thanks, but I guess I should have specified that I went from the stock Telecom 2.1 to the Telecom branded 2.2. Is it expected that the market region would change? Can anyone still on the Telecom 2.1 tell me what region they are in?

It can't hurt to try, if that's what you're worried about. If it doesn't work I believe it will just power up as normal. All the sites I've seen recommend trying it before doing anything else, and I've never seen a warning attached to that advice.

This new firmware is great. This is how the phone should have been from the get go...

to the dude upgrading, I use odin and it was simple and problem free. Kies is a pile of junk, I have tried using it once and it wouldn't detect so I just gave up on it.

I will be on the new firmware pretty soon, download is nearly done, good times! First one since JPK that seemed worth the effort!

So I finally have to get my feet wet with Odin? Sounds slightly terrifying, but I guess the first step is to find it. Then read about it. Then get it wrong a few times...

Wish me luck. *gulp*
