Torquenstein: So froyo is out via kies for VNZ?

 Yeah version JP3 I believe.
If u got a VFNZ fone then it should pick up automatically.
Otherwise u'll need the kies registry fix.

I have a vfnz phone, says this phone cannot be updated or the latest version is already installed. Im on JH1...

There is no update. Two people off these forums have been able to update successfully. I have no idea how.

@Torq - it depends on region as to what eclair updates are done prior to 2.2

Usually it takes some time, but any more than 10 minutes I'd be asking the question again.  Though I never went 2.1 to 2.2 via Kies so I'm really not sure how long you should expect.  But going from one Rom to another does take some time.

@Torq I had the same issue, waited for a while and then pressed the middle button on the phone, the phone then booted normally.

Artoo if you still haven't managed to get rid of Voodoo it sounds like the application lets you boot into recovery and select disable lagfix from there...

Having recently purchased an I9000 from expert infotech, I have been reading xda and here for tips on rooting and flashing new ROMs. But this thread is soo huge I was hoping someone(s) could just give me the facts all in a neat package lol.

My phone seems to be a Hong Kong I9000 16GB model, running ZSJH1 firmware and I think ZSJI1 CSC (whatever that is). I have tried the z4root app - which worked fine in temporary mode (haven't tried permanent until I do more research).

It does seem to be lagging too...

The 3 button boot to recovery mode does NOT seem to be working on my phone..... Hence, some trepedation.

Any tips? old hand at flashing/hacking smart phones, but new to the samsung. Seems to be a LOT of snags.

Thanks!

@Brendon, first step, update via kies to froyo.

Then decide what you want.

If you want custom rom then goto custom rom, suggest doc's rom, clear instructions are on xda.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
If you use custom rom, then use the lagfix built into the custom rom, details in that thread.
The instructions advice you to use chainfire pre doc's (atleast they did when i went to custom rom, probably still the case)

If you want stock rom with lagfix then install vodoo
http://project-voodoo.org/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774500
I can't remember if voodoo will add 3br (aka 2e) and root / su / busybox, if you want these it might be better to do chainfire first then do voodoo

If you want stock rom without lagfix but with root + 3br + su + busybox then use chainfire.

Just discovered that BT HID Devices do not appear to work with the 2.2.1 firmware, which was otherwise working so well for me!

Looks like I'm still waiting for CM ROM, or else going back to an earlier Froyo build. Bugger.

EDIT: OK, strange, tried again and its working fine (gives a message that the Samsung keyboard must be in use in order to use a BT keyboard though).

EDIT EDIT: Thought it was working with Swype, but it changes the keyboard to the Samsung keyboard when its connected to a BT keyboard, sadly doesn't change it back afterwards...

Plasmadog:
Forgotten: Hi guys,

Bought a Galaxy S on XT a few weeks ago and have been wanting to flash it for a while. Have read numerous tutorials on it and am comfortable enough with the actual flashing process, what I'm not comfortable with though is what to flash.

So from the stock Eclair firmware on XT what should I be flashing to? Not overly concerned with going to 2.2.1, but I'd like to move to Froyo.

Also of note, I've tried all the registry hacks and everything for Kies without success, so I'd prefer to use Odin to do the flashing - this is my main problem as I need a copy of the firmware.

So has anyone managed to get the Froyo firmware for XT? Or alternatively recommend one I should go to.

Discussed here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=70996&page_no=2
Follow one of the links there to download a version you can use with Odin, which is what I did with mine. Do me a favor though and take note of your market region before you do anything (you can use the Market Enabler app to see your region code), because it seems to get changed during the upgrade and I'd like to know what the original code was.

It's region code at the moment is 53005, thought I'd tell you before I did anything else in case I break it. :)

Just watched a little of a 720P MKV with subtitles on JPU. Sweet. My bloody PS3 can't even play those!

Noticed after copying the file across that the media scanner is much faster to scan my 32GB card on this firmware. Nice.

EDIT: Even better than I thought - in settings there are now subtitle options - you can choose text size and colour and even change how they are sync'd - so if there are sync issues you can fix them from within the app! Brilliant.

@Forgotten - Thanks for that. That's what I have now after the upgrade too, so there must be something else causing my market issues.

I have the HTC Desire HD and I just cannot see the screen outdoors.    I have looked at reviews and tried making sense through these 175 pages.

In everyday use how is the screen in daylight.
How is ringing volume.
If I bought NZ phone from Noelleeming Vodafone etc, will there be a 2.2 ota update.

How serious is the lag i keep hearing about.
