@DrD you might want to update with a link to the latest speedmod kernel K11 as that is apparently using the XXJPU Stock Kernel and works fine. Also I read that there is an issue with Mass Storage mounting as read only in XXJPU.

Hi all, I currently have 2.2 via kies hack and would like to flash 2.2.1. The problem I am having is getting 2.2 rooted so I can backup all my apps & settings with titanium.

z4root is not working (not sure why, it just stops)
one click root isn't working because I have 3e recovery
Chainfires 2e recovery thingy isn't available for JP3 (as far as I know)

What's the best path to take??

The only thing I can think of is having to flash another official Samfirmware version that Chainfire does have a root (and busy box) fix for.

Im assuming

You're currently on JP3
You want to move to JPU (2.2.1)

If so, are you able to put your phone into download mode (down+home+power)
Odin is SUPER easy to use to flash 2.2.1 from a previous Froyo Firmware (i went from JPK to JPU).
Once you've flashed JPU or any other 2.2.1 Firmware you can root pretty easily with either SuperOneClick or CF Root. IMO (and the reason i chose it) CF enables 2e recovery which is what i prefer for future ROM swaps etc. If you're not looking to continually swap out firmware roms then Superoneclick is stupidly easy to use.

From my own experience (as late as this weekend just been) always try to do clean installs - factory wipe and clear cache etc.

I don't care how you say you aquired it or what you plan to do with the proceeds.
People reading this thread deserve to be informed that they can get it cheaper with more protection. If you continue to offer it at that price, whether it be true or not, it simply makes you look like you are profiteering given the circumstances.

Best of luck with the sale.

Fine. I am just trying to make the best of a situation I don't want to be in. If i could justify it i would keep the phone, but with no job, and being forced to move out of home it is not something I can justify keeping, price is lowered to $799 until midnight tonight.

Yep I was on JP3 now on JPU, it was easy. It was mainly the back before hand but I had most of it backed up previously anyway so I just took the plunge.

I also flashed the 3 button recovery fix a few weeks ago that was all good

I'm 2.2.1 & rooted, cheers for the help. I even have an old titanium backup with most of my setting in.

Man this does seem faster (Quadrant: 1224)

Nice one!

I downloaded Doc's JPU rom last night and when I was catching up on the thread this morning he'd put up a v3.  So I've downloaded that this morning all ready to go flash JPU tonight.  I feel like I'm the last one to get onto JPU now ;-)

Oh, and as always, you should confirm your IMEI number has remained intact.  No one suggested you backup your /efs.  Maybe you did, or had an earlier copy of it.  It's fairly rare that someone has their IMEI changed, though for all that, I know it's happened in this forum, even though it's rare.

I'm going to get T-shirts printed I think:

"Recovered IMEI and proud!"

It really is the height of stupidity that doing a full system backup (or even an app/data backup) requires root access, which borks your warranty.  Do HTC phones running Android require such illogical processes?

I'm now in the same situation as sittingduckz - feeling somewhat vulnerable because I can't get rooted in order to do a granular backup.

Without wading through XDA, have the bulk of the JPU issues been resolved?
