YodAboY: So I've done the 2.2.1 update from samfirmware...

It certainly makes the phone much snappier - But I've got issues with accessing the internet of 3g, and can't make a USB connection to transfer files and such.

It also fixed my lack of 3br, which is a bonus.

Yeah, I have the same problem with the laptop not seeing the phone via USB connection.  Still nutting that one out myself.

fahrenheit:
Neets: New question.

I can't connect the phone to the computer and MTP is still on there.

I also can't see my external SD card.  When I tried to take a backup of my homescreen settings for LP it said something about not finding an external SD card.

Can anyone remember what you need to do to get the external SD card to be recognised?  I can see it in root explorer but when I went to select a photo off my external SD it says "not external SD card detected".

I had my external SD card OUT while flashing via Odin so I can't see how it's corrupted. I've also used it to copy a file to it from my computer (since the computer doesn't see the phone) and then used Root Explorer to move the file from External to Internal SD card.

At a bit of a loss over this one [scratches head]  Bed time.  Will ponder on it.

Settings/Wireless and network/USB settings.

You should see -

* Samsung Kies
* Media player
* Mass storage
* Ask on connection

It defaulted on Kies for me and I had to tell it twice that I wanted it to be Mass storage. It seems to have stuck for now.

Nice one, thanks.  Initially it said I had to insert a CD but then it kicked into life and showed all the files on the internal and external SD. Though I wonder why the Kies connection no longer shows the phone like it used to.

Been playing around with the voice input via the keyboard for texting. Pretty nifty little feature. I kept wondering why sometimes it doesnt quite get the words right. I then realised the ROM developer has the locale permanently set to USA. I'm guessing for certain apps from the Market maybe? Anyway i decided to give it another go and this time everything works great... with an american accent haha!

sure enough.. auckland came out as oakland

and aluminium came out as garbage.. until i pronounced it as a-loo-mah-nim.

Quite funny!

ArtooDetoo:
sittingduckz: After updating to JPU I can no long send mms messages. I have entered the apn settings however I'm still having no luck.

Enter this in the message app settings - (Set message center):
+13123149810

The plus sign has to be there.

Works for me so good luck dude.

Cheers,
ArteeTooDoo

The message centre number is particular to the operator you're using. The number you quoted is a US number and probably belongs to a US carrier. It probably shouldn't work and if it does may not work for long. Normally the phone should load the SMSC or message centre number from the SIM. For 2degrees the number is +64220227672. For VF it should be +6421600600 or something (that number is probably wrong, its from memory).

On the subject of MMS I noticed that it loaded an APN for 2degrees internet automatically when I upgraded to JPU/Darkyys. However the APN was wrong in that it was marked as type 'internet + mms' instead of just internet (among other errors). So even if I had then created an mms APN with the correct settings it probably would not have worked because of the wrong setting under the internet APN. Might be worth checking.

Thanks for all the help with the various obstacles I came across tonight. That had to be the most time consuming flash and it's not quite set up as it was before. Almost 2 hours after bedtime I'm going to sleep. Cheers!

So, first time flashing my phone tonight, went to Doc's XXJPU (3.0.1).

Wow, just wow.

Going from Telecom's version of Eclair to this is pretty amazing. The phone feels like it was actually worth the money now.

After setting up APN's everything appears to be working, SMS both inbound and outbound work (saw Artoo's trouble so thought I'd check this). Data is working fine, only workaround I had to use was this using terminal emulator:

su
chmod 0666 /dev/usb_mtp_gadget

To get the phone to talk to Kies so I could copy my contacts back to it. Backed up all my apps with Titanium backup before I did anything, but didn't really have that much saved so I decided to start fresh anyway.

Backed up Eclair and my /efs folder before I did anything also using ROM manager (and terminal emulator again) and have it sitting safely on my PC now incase I need to go back to it for warranty reasons. Glad I did a lot of reading and asked questions before I tried anything, everything went off without a hitch.

Thanks for the response n4.

It's spooky that the offshore number worked. Sending SMS worked first time once I'd tried it. And still works.

I'll try to find a VNZ specific # but something tells me that won't be as easy as it could be.

I've input the correct VNZ APN settings for 3G and MMS according to the sticky in the Android forum, and the sttings others have offered with the result that 3G is enabled and SMS receive is fine - sending is not. Emails are good both ways, which suggests the APN is as it should be. So that leaves the question of why SMS send has karked it.

I'm going to post in the Vodafone forum to see if anybody there can shed some light on this and I'll report back with any info I might get. Meanwhile, the txt send still functions, so I guess I'll continue to use it until I find a better solution.

Cheers,

Nice one.

Might have to try the terminal emulator string you have for getting Kies to work (only need it for USB connection to the PC.  Prefer that to mounting the internal and external cards).  I hadn't come across that wee gem, where was it mention?  Cheers.

I really wanted to stay on stock 2.2.1.  Yeah yeah, I've only had it on overnight.  But overnight my battery drained to 19%.  I feel like lokhor ;-)

I had flashed with a full battery, and had my phone connected to the computer during flashing of the CSC.  Sure I expected some battery drain but not that much overnight.

So I'll be going to Doc's rom tonight.  And I've promised myself to get to bed at 9pm and asked hubby to kick me off the computer if I'm still here at that time (which he's fairly confident I will be) :P

Your recollection is better than you thought. VNZ message centre # is as you remembered it - +6421600600. Cool

And it's working fine. The only mystery is how the number was ever deleted from the SIM. I always remove the SIM (and ext sd card) when flashing, so I don't understand how it could have vanished, as it clearly did.

So you saved me much posting and searching n4. Thanks a whole heap for the tip and hopefully I'll be able to return the favour someday.

Cheers,

Now that I have all the doodads functional again, I can once more bask in the glow of the almost-perfection that is 2.2.1. Still smooth, still responsive, still a joy to use. Is it better than an iPhone 4? Dunno, but it's at least as good in its user interaction, it's lighter and the screen is bigger, and it's noticably superior in the great outdoors. If nothing else, the iP4 has a real competitor in this phone.

Time will tell if lag reappears, but so far, nary a whiff of it.

And the GPS is locking, in my office, in under 10 seconds. Awesome.

Thanks to the OP for the heads-up that this update was available and to the peeps who chimed in with tips and advice. And Mummy Neets for the cheek and encouragement.

You're a great bunch of people.

All the best,
R2D2

PS: I just know that some other tempting Update-O-Goodness™ will get me lusting to flash again, so expect this to be a short-lived oasis of contentment. Laughing

I'm guessing the phone needs to be rooted to perform this kind of superuser command?

There's another version of this fix which uses 0777 instead of 0666, and it's added to init.rc to survive reboots.

Is anyone else having issues with intermittent 3g internet?

Yes, you need to be rooted to get Super User.  If you use Chainfire's file then it's a real easy 10second flash in Odin.

When you say intermittent 3g internet, do you mean it just turns it on for no good reason?  I had that last night, just the once and it showed both Wifi and 3g going at the same time.  Daft.
