Wipeout: Update: So far I nearly threw my phone against the wall few times. I've downloaded the SDK files, added ADB to tools folder. However, my laptop is not installing drivers for the phone with USB debuging mode on. It did when I tried first time, now nothing happens... :( Any suggestions?

I took some notes (yes, what a surprise) when I set mine up.  I also learnt that it's better to install it (you can copy it) directly to the C: and then some rename it simply to "SDK" (without the quotes).  Your Tools folder is a subfolder of SDK - right?

here's what I noted down:

Open cmd.exe and run as Administrator

You'll need to type the full file directory to change:  NOT cd <enter>

cd c:\android-sdk-windows <enter>

cd tools <enter>

To get to the root directory, type:  cd \<enter>

***************

You'll need to be in Debugging Mode on the phone before connecting/running ADB

Menu

Settings

Applications

Development

USB debugging

** Kies should not be running

** You'll need to be in the TouchWiz (disable LauncherPro as the default)

And here's a link to a "dummies guide to ADB" from XDA, and I'm not insinuating you're a dummy :)

And I had found a YouTube video that showed you how to run a command to check that SDK could find your device i.e. the drivers were installed.  I'll see if I can locate that, it's not in my notes [look of horror!]

When I was first looking for a solution, I came across this method, this young lady is really quite good IMO and she's got 3 methods to get into recovery, one is using the SDK method.  So perhaps seeing this video might help.  I never looked as far as the SDK method she shows, I was making sure I understood how to get into recovery using the 3BR mode.

This YouTube video shows how to get the drivers.

kiwijunglist: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=chainfire+root ; it's the first result

make sure you read and follow all instructions
That method states that I already need to have a JPX fw, which I don't, and it's a root for those who do... would this be what you're talking about? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754, under ADB reboot recovery section?

ArtooDetoo:
nofam: Can you kind folks please advise whether SuperOneClick is a viable option to root my Official (henceforth known as Fish Offal, due to it's stinking lag. . .) JP3?

I've given up on getting z4root to work (hangs, crashes the phone pretty much), so if I can't find a way to get root access so I can apply unsigned zips and get backups working again, I'm heading back away from the light towards Doc's dingy diner and his greasy fried-up ROMs.

Yes. Be prepared for the debug on, debug off dance, but it gets there in the end. However, there are 'proper' root routes to go down which give you CWM 2e and stuff which seems like a better way to go. Having said that but, I used SOC root and all is going swimmingly following a shaky start. Sorry to hear you have lag back again. I can recommend RyanZA's OCLF. I can't recommend Voodoo. I think it killed my wifi.

Others are diametrically opposed to my thinking on this, so feel free to ignore my advice, I would.  Laughing

Cheers,

Cheers for that - when you say 'proper' root routes, are you talking about flashing a different kernel?  I was hoping for a reversible method if necessary, based on keeping my phone as stock as possible. . . . But yes, all I'm really after is CWM 2e access.

Just to clarify the Voodoo issue you had, did you apply the zip, or flash his pda with Odin?  And was it a pre-release, or the 5.0 stable?

Hey Neets, that ADB guide for dummies is for XP/Vista. Shouldn't make any difference if I have Windows 7, right?

Can I use this instead?  http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/

The method I used was to go into recovery with a command from adb, then use odin to flash an official bell canada 3br rom update. Worked great, the phone was on eclair at the time. Thread on xda all about it, supposed to be very safe. I did a search for my firmware first tho, several said it worked for them.

Brendan, thank you. :>

Right, so ADB test went well, and under command prompt I got this back:

List of devices attached

9000b2badd3b device

So that means ADB is working properly now! Yay! :D

Now I need to figure out how to go into download mode in ADB. As per Neets' suggested link(bottom of the page instructions) http://nfye.com/toolkit/Doc-Froyo.pdf

What does he mean "download mode (ADB method)"? I need to run a command in command line, correct? But what command?

Edit: found it - adb reboot download. Is this right? That should put my phone into download mode, then I can run the bootloader fix as per above instructions in Odin. Just checking with you guys if this is correct. hahaha... while absolutely sh*ting myself. :P

I found one that seems to be a better version of what I did - more verification its compatible- you might want to check it out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821698.

Sh*ting yourself is a prerequisite :-D

Did you have a look at the YouTube link I had for the 3 different methods?  One of them was for the SDK, it starts just before 1/2 in the video timeline.

I didn't use the SDK method to gain recovery and didn't fix my 3BR that way (I used a reg hack which ended up giving me the Canadian fix and making my phone I9000M - which I later fixed).

leave it plugged in, don't reset it. Go to xda and do some searches. Did odin actually flash anything and then fail or did it stop before that? Read the link above I gave you and try again?
