Yup, works with Kies fine.

When I get it connected to Kies and go to update, it comes back with the following:

Model Name: GT - I9000
Current Verstion: PDA:JH1 / PHONE:JH1 /CSC:JH2
The latest version is already installed on connected device.

Where was your phone purchased do you know the region code?

You can use this - XDA Kies Registry Patcher

It changes region code in kies to a region where 2.2 update is available for your phone.  Then you can goto 2.2, then apply chainfire.  After that use root explorer or terminal (free, but more complicated) to backup your efs directory.  I never needed to use kies registry patcher because my phone was parallel imported (I think it was from germany).

Got it from Harvey Norman. No idea what the region code is, sorry.

The region code will be NZ if you got it from Harvey Norman. You can either wait for 2.2 to become available for NZ or change to a different country.

If you intend to always stick with stock firmwares then maybe best to bite the bullet and wait for NZ Froyo.

If you intend to go custom roms then change region code, get 2.2 via kies, then add chainfire, backup efs data, then mess around with custom roms.

The advantage with sticking with custom NZ specific firmware, is that it is meant to have a specially designed modem part of the firmware for NZ conditions, not really sure if it really makes a lot of difference, but that however is the main difference as I understand it.

Wipeout: Booted up fine! :> Thank you for your help.

Sh****t, that was scary.

Now to figure out what went wrong. Any suggestions peeps? All I'm trying to do is to fix the 3 button combo issue, right. I've followed everything very carefully in instructions.

I guess good thing is that ADB is working fine.

Glad it was ok, I thought you might be when you provided that odin log.

This is the link I used to do my 2.1 update1 phone the other day: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 . It does all firmware's, and will put 2e recovery (3br) on your phone. From that, you can flash clockworkmod, and a new rom (including 2.2, I went with darkys latest).

What I did before I flashed anything was to type in my firmware number into the xda search (use the 'show posts option not the threads...) and just see if others had had trouble or success. Several had done fine, so off I went... And held my breath.

The other link I posted to you seems to be an advancement on the one just above. It allows some verification BEFORE you flash.

btw - before you update firmware/flash anything using odin or kies you need to disable any lagfixes you might be running. you should know this already as there are warnings all over xda, but i just mention it just in case.

The problem with Kies patcher method is that the instruction state to get the 3 button combo working before even trying it. This is why I was attempting to get 3 button combo working in the first place.

The plan was to get 3 button combo working first. Then get 2.2 by spoofing Kies. Spoofing Kies also give me option to back up my current fw. Once I have backed up my current fw and have the 2.2 on my phone, I can start playing around with custom roms via Odin, knowing that I have a 3 button combo working, plus a copy of my stock 2.1 on my computer.

I couldn't get the 3 button combo enabled. lol

Yes, I was trying that second time around, after the failed msg came through. I then downloaded that Richtofen's file and attached it to PDA, but as I've mentioned before, it came back as failed. I just think I should have started again, by unplugging my phone etc. But I was just scared to touch it, because it was stuck in download mode.

What I will do, is that I will follow Richthofen's instruction when I'm doing this second time. I need to go out for a little while, but will try it this arvo. Will keep you updated. Thanks for the advice bud. :>

Edit, Clockwork mod is something that allows me to back up my current fw, right?

KJ, I don't have any lagfixes applied on my phone. It's stock standard, apart from ADW Launcher.

Ahhh I see the dilemma.

Whenever you flash anything without 3 button recovery there is a risk, and all the methods of getting 3 button recovery require some sort of flashing.

So basically you have to make sure that you are flashing a 3 button recovery mod that is 100% reliable and 100% suited to your current firmware PDA:JH1 / PHONE:JH1 /CSC:JH2

Here's what I used to get the 3BR done.  My phone is an Optus one so it made sense for me to follow the Aussies.  It did give me the I9000M though on the boot up screen. I later fixed that, can't remember how now.  Might have notes about it at home.

Yup, the risk is there, of course. I've messaged Richthofen in the past, because I couldn't find the right CSC for NZ. He said just to use the instructions on the front page of this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201

I will give it a go this arvo. Stand by for more tears and swearing! :P

Thanks Neets. There is also this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CDRVTRFI which I found on Whirlpool. It doesn't require changing fw, like you had to. It's quite recent. I will check that out, because I'm not keen on changing my product code, due to warranty. :>

Reading the end of the thread I posted, seems that method is no longer available (the reg. file has been removed) but there's a link a page back with another way.

My product code didn't change, just the boot up showed GT-I900M instead of GT-I9000 because the reg fix was issued by Samsung Canada, and they have an "M" at the end. Yeah it might have done other stuff but the phone worked just fine, and I researched other stuff and found a way to get the M off it.

i don't like look of i9000M because the M version the one with the 3G: 850G modem (XT), whereas I have international i9000 with 3G: 900G modem (VODAFONE)

The link you provided is for the download of the file.  I don't know what this is for.

Also, did you know that when you post a link, if you select the 2nd option in the drop down list for the "window" to open, it will open the link in a NEW window i.e the Geekzone tab remains and isn't replaced by the link you've provided.  Much nicer not to be kicked out of Geekzone when you're viewing another link :-)  There's my Christmas wish, I don't ask for much Innocent
