snowsteve: Hi all

Just a few more questions about the Galaxy S

- Does it have any scratch resistant coating ?

- How are people finding the plastic case in term of scratching ?

- Is the silver surround metal of some sort ? (similar to the Iphone ?)

- Is the plastic casing fairly rugged / hard plastic or very bendy ? is it similar to the iphone 3g/s rear casing in terms of hardness ?

Thanks once again :)

- Scratch and break resistant on the screen only, as the video above shows, tougher than an iPhone 4...
- Plastic case is fine, isn't as flimsy as many reviews led me to believe and hasn't shown any scratches, even though I've had it in my pocket with some keys by accident(was in a rush)
- A tad bendy when removed from the phone, on the phone it's a snug fit, not quite as strong as the iPhone 3gs, but then again, you can't remove the battery or hot swap the Sim/Memory card from the iPhone 3gs.
- Also some reviews have complained about the uinit being "too light"  not really sure why, it feels good imo

Oh and to answer the above about CGA above, yes that company is registered in NZ with registered NZ Owners, so technically should change their T&C since the CGA does apply to them :)

Cheap and flimsy is the plastic.   I'm getting an aluminum case as soon as they become available.
I don't care too much what the phone is made out of really because I always put it in a case in the end anyway.

Did you see the youtube clip of the guy with the galaxy s putting the phone in a bag with tons of metal objects and trying to scratch the heck out of it?

Kilack: Just flashed my phone with the kernel that allows you to store system data on an external sd card...

Wow the phone is now _lightning_ fast...
Definitely worth it if the delays annoy you.
http://android.modaco.com/content/samsung-galaxy-s-s-modaco-com/313365/updated-real-fix-for-the-stal.../

So with that fix, you only formatted your card, then applied the PDA file in odin?

So all your apps/settings/APNs stayed the same?  Far out!!! Think i might just have to do this, haven't really noticed the lag, but wouldn't mind replacing the Samsung icons with the LauncherPro icons

Think this image says it all, can't wait for 2.2, especially since in that fix they didn't modify the JIT at all?

I had already flashed jg1 and the r2 custom rom from modaco... and had been running on that for a while but yes then it was just a matter of partitioning the external sdcard and then just flashing the new kernel on the phone which doesn't wipe out anything...

Interesting though I did the exact same thing on my wifes phone today and very different results..
Her phone turned out even slower.. it seems the phone really doesn't like the microsd cards that clove supplied...

On my phone I had used a class 6 adata 16 gig card and it flies along.. the clove class 4 8 gig card well it caused serious issues for the phone. bench marking the card it shouldnt happen because its not that slow... but it does......
see new firmware has just leaked out again for the galaxy s..

Yeah i did see the clip, im fairly careful with my phones and will also get a aluminum case when they are available.

I hoping to get one of these from Clove very soon, its just hard ~ you can read all the forums etc but cannot just walk into a shop and see/feel one before buying.. hence all the questions :)

Cheers

Ahh thanks for you help on that one, very hard to imagine what the phone is like from just reading forums etc.

Cheers

Yeah, it's all user based opinion, so it is quite hard,

Some people like the screen feel, some people hate it
Some people like the plastic on the back, some people hate it :)

Really really difficult to tell, do you live near a DigiPara store? think they should have a few coming in soonish.

http://www.samsunghub.com/2010/07/14/samsung-plans-to-sell-10m-galaxy-s-over-million-already-sold/

Couple of new and interesting articles out today, 1 mill sold already...without even a proper release worldwide, still Canada, US, most of Asia, NZ, AU, Africa to go and Spain, Germany, France etc

Also tipped release of 2.2 for South Korean users in early August...really hope this comes true

Yeah good news about froyo.  Did I read that right in thinking that the froyo upgrade will be plain vanilla android? and that the next release would add back the samsung UI touchwiz etc?

(if so that would be awesome...)

Good to note that people are reporting the latest leaked firmware has a huge decrease in the lag problems of earlier firmwares... though apparently it makes the live wallpapers sluggish...
Obviously samsung are working at it though which is good news.. firmwares are coming out twice weekly almost...

Yeah finally seems that Samsung is getting their act together, even more updates than HTC at the moment...maybe they've hired a proper development team, not the bunch of loonies that did the original Spica firmware

It sounds that way, looks like they are just using straight up Froyo and modifying the JIT, drivers etc to get it working well with our phones :)
I doubt I'll be going to Touchwiz again when 2.2 comes out.... I prefer stock Froyo with Swype

Expanding further on that, touchwiz 3.0 isn't that bad, it is just that it doesn't really offer much over vanilla android and in some cases is even worse..i think the lockscreen is bad for one...

I'd prefer to see Samsung and other phone makers concentrate on getting the hardware done right and the firmware/drivers to use the hardware properly.

Let google take care of the OS, they are doing a fine job.

That would also allow faster rollouts of new android versions too.
Feel free to bundle apps like samsung did though :)

Hey back from the UK and feeling like a zombie. Desperately trying to make heads and tails of the various data and MMS settings... no sleep for 30 odd hours and jet lag ain't helping. So... Could some one point me at the correct settings for android and Vodafone? Or, even better (but lazy of me) give me a list of the settings I need?

Cheers either way

Thanks very much for that.

I set those but I have one question you (or others) may be able to answer: the first APN gives default as the APN type: I have MMS, Internet or MMS+Internet, any idea which I set?

I get a little H symbol next to my connection, which is not listed in the user guide.... (like G for GPRS or E for EDGE) so I dunno what that is. When I try to go to the internet I get a green up arrow but a red down...

My PXT test.... is in progress... 'sending' for a while now. MMmmm I am not in a 3G area, in the wilds of the Wairarapa, but they normally still work.
