kiwitrc: Thanks Neets, I will get into it tomorrow. All makes sense to me, but the Epic Tamarillo beer is starting to take priority right now. Tomorrow I flash!

I didn't know Epic made a Tamarillo beer.  Not that I drink beer, or like Tamarillos.

I never used to drink, swear, blaspheme or rant.

And then I bought a Galaxy S. . . . Wink

Ok time to have a crack using Odin to recover the phone. I have a second Galaxy bought at the same time with the following files, PDA - I9000SRJP3, CSC-I9000SRJP2, CSC-I9000VNZJP3 Build 2010.12, so under Odin (ver 1.7) do I put a JP3 file in the section PDA and CSC and a JP2 file in the phone section?

Mmm, I'm not sure.  Where did you get the files from?  Sometimes there's just the one file all encompassing.  Other times there's 3 different *.tar files.  MODEM, CODE and CSC.  The CSC is the CSC, the MODEM the Phone and CODE is the PDA.

Thats what I get when I go *#1234# on the working phone

Edit, OK I see now when you run the .tar there are three files, but now I need to enter a password to unlock it??

Edit 2 Google is your friend. got the password.

I am trying to recover from being stuck at boot after an official KIES update yesterday, at this stage I would be happy to just go back to the official Vodafone firmware, but it seems that isnt an option

If you've got another phone running the vnz firmware there are probably ways to get it back. If you take a nandroid backup and grab the cache.rfs from that. There is a guy on xda who can make it into a csc file for you.

Hello, just got myself a SGS with 2.2 on it and can see that I am realy gonna love this phone.

Just quickly, what are the latest and greatest apps you think I should install to get the most out of the phone.  There is so much info out there you just don't know where to start....

I will be looking at

Root app
Lag fix
Backup
Battery optimization etc
A good multiuser email app
App/Task controller

Cheers Chris

Shoot over to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913

Pick a version from the "Europe" section and download it, all the files are there to install via Oden, I recommend the JPX or the JPY versions as these are the most up-to-date and fastest versions available.

From here, it will be like having the normal Vodafone rom, you will be just 2 steps ahead.

Hi Chris,

First of all, there are lots of goodies in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665 for you to take a look at. I recommend using the Z4Root app from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 just to get the initial root on your device, from here grab the OCLF .APK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760571 (It's easiest to grab the APK Installer app from the market and drop the APK files from these into your SDcard)

That will give you root, and also a lagfix.

Backup is a simple one, give Titanium Backup a go, it's in the market.

Battery is dependant on the rom that you use, but if you want something that looks nice, grab Darkys Rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091 -  watch the video on the thread to install it. This is a custom rom with quite a bit done with it, it already has root and a lagfix applied so you don't need to worry about these. If you want to stick to the standard Vodafone Rom then don't go this method until you are comfortable.

Multiuser Email is already built in, but I use Gmail.

You don't need to worry about Task Manager, in fact, don't install anything - Watchdog is all you need. It just tells you if a app is misbehaving but it's a myth that you need a Task Manager on Android.  Read http://lifehac.kr/gtdLVQ to see what I mean by this.

Ok thanks for that. I got the csc files and the I9000XXJPY|2.2.1 files but now not sure what to put where in Odin. pit file is obvious but XXJPY extracts to JPY_JPY_JPY and the CSC files throws up a bunch of different files. Any suggestions.
