Thanks, all worked fine, but I think the phone may have a hard fault. It gets further through the boot sequence now, up to the second Galaxy screen but it stops there, waits for ages vibrates (as it did before) vibrates again and shuts down. Will try Odin again using the JP3 firmware

Ah yes, I had this problem. The trick was to use the JPU firmware (JPX should work too), make sure "Re-Partition" is ticked as this wipes any corrupt lagfixes that have been applied in the past.

From here, install CF-Root using Oden from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 - This will give you the full Clockwork Recovery image.

If things boot from here, then you are set, either download DOC's rom, or the latest Darky 6.0 rom, and install that via CWM.

Remember: It's not bricked if you can still get to Download Mode, it's only a soft fault, soooo:

Awesome, thanks! I did the JPU thing and the phone seems to be working again. Do I still need to do the root thing from here?

Yeah if you want Root, then go ahead with CF-Root, but since JPU was released as "Beta Firmware" it's best to upgrade to JPX using Oden then using CF-Root.

Wipeout:
michaelmurfy:
Wipeout: The only problem with that link you gave above is that I don't have download or recovery mode enabled. Still working on it. Trying to get my head around Heimdall to get 3 button combo (recovery/download) fixed.

I can go into download through ADB method, but not keen on using Odin without recovery, just in case.

I will uninstall everything I've done and try again.

Edit: Nofam, thanks, I will try that. :>

Ah good point, the safest method of doing this is the one explained at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 - Follow that and you will get Download Mode working.

You can also do this with Heimdall, but I wouldn't recommend it since Heimdall is still a beta app, and things could go wrong. I have had no issues with Heimdall but am just thinking "Just in case"

Cool, I will keep this in mind. However, Richthofen's method is not safe. If you read that thread (which I did! all those pages... :() every page has at least one brick.

I found this  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821698, and there are no bricks reported so far. That thread pointed me to the Heimdall, as it mentions the fact that if Windows recognises my phone drivers fine (they give you step by step guide to determine this), then using Heimdall to enable bootloaders is bulletproof.

I'm not completely useless with technology, but Heimdall has been a little challenging for me (you need to install the drivers before doing anything), so I'm doing more reading and research on it before taking a plunge. :>

It was not when it first got released (as beta's go) - but now it's pretty darn stable, Heimdall is good if you use anything BUT Windows (So if you are a Linux User then go for it) - it's quite easy to get your head around too + I think they have a GUI now too.

I have used this method on a few phones now, but using Heimdall, Oden is not bad now.

google "xda cf-root" or "xda chainfire root" it adds root, cwm and 3 button recovery.

Interesting, I tried JPX but it returned to the crashed state again, so I reloaded JPU and it works. Might be something to do with one JP file versus three JP files??

Needs a download mode to be enabled on it already mate, which I don't. Plus I must use Odin, which means there is a chance of it bricking my phone, and without the recovery enabled this means good bye to my phone.

If it has got 1 file, it is either just a PDA flash or a CWM flash, it's best to go for the full 3 file flashes, I could mirror these for you if you wish.

Thanks I would appreciate that. Phone seems to be going fine on JPU but just in case I might throw JPX on to be sure before root.

http://work.murfy.co.nz/sgs/ - there we go.

Just use the 512.pit file from one of the other roms, or don't tick "re-partition" if you are using it without. Or give Darkys rom a go (I shoved that there for you too)

MegaUpload sucks, so do the other filesharing sites >.<

No reason to go from JPU to JPX unless you're a Kies user (which if you're flashing with Odin you have no need to be).
