Neets: That was a heap of fun.  The navigation app is really good.  We've also adopted the name "Amy" (as explained on the XDA thread - Jeremy Clarkson named the voice).

We only tootled a few k's to the local supermarket and clearly knew our way.  I drove home so hubby could see what was happening.  I took many detours (as many as you can with only 2km) to see how the app reacted.

Hubby is pretty impressed.  Though there's no replacement for my excellent map reading skills Tongue out  I kid you not, even hubby doesn't hesitate to admit how good I am with maps.

If you've not yet got MobileNavigator, I'd recommend it.  It's free using the MarketEnabler app (free on the market).  You've got nothing to lose.  Follow the link I posted above for the settings to change in MarketEnabler so you can see MobileNavigator in the market.

Right, now off to find something else new I can do with the phone.  Does it ever end?  I hope not.  This is too much fun.

Grabbed it as well following those instructions. Nice :-)

Forgotten: So, just arrived home, sure enough no XT reception being picked up by the phone.

Going to flash the JK4 modem now. On a bright note though I tried Navigon on the way home and really liked it. If anyone is using their i9000 for navigation would highly recommend getting it (plus it's free if you do it right!).

edit: Took the modem slightly longer than I would've thought to lock on to the network (was only an extra few seconds). But have full bars of signal strength now!

How are you finding the call quality on JK4? I've also got a Telecom SGS and people are always complaining that I sound distorted. Have been through quite a few modems but nothing seems to give decent calls. Even the modem from Telecom's 2.2 update is crap.

JK4 or JL3 should solve your voice issues. There's also JK3, though Im assuming you're already on it?

I'm actually on JPP right now, tried JK3 but apparently JPP sounded better. While JPP is pretty good it's still not as clear as it should be and wifi has been flakey on it. Anyway I'll flash JK4 and give that a go.

Has anyone formatted their internal SD?  I've got a bit of stuff on there. But I'm confused about what I can delete.  There's a folder for Screen Capture, and folders for other apps e.g. Titanium Backup, clockworkmod (which naturally holds all my nandroid backups, and probably the cause of most of my disk usage), download, dropbox, extended controls, Navigon and on and on it goes.

I can of course make a copy of it all and put it on my computer.  If I format the internal SD, will all the folders reappear as and when I use the apps, or will I lose all the settings etc?  Like Extended Controls where I've created profiles.  I guess that will be lost even though the widgets are on my phone.

See, not a geek at all!

For now though I'm fiddling around with Navigon, used market enabler to get it for free, going to see if it can get me home in a couple of hours.

If anyone needs the Swype files to get Swype working on Doc's V6.2 XXJPY let me know and I'll upload them somewhere. Not really sure why Doc took it out of his new ROM, it's been in all the old ones.

How do you get Navigon for free? I've installed Market Enabler, and tricked it to thinking I'm on T-Mobile (US) and used the Market to search for Navigon, but it's showing a US$ cost.  TIA

It's just "Google Maps Navigation" - comes with Google Maps, it's now free to use in NZ. It speaks to you during driving etc. Just called "Navigation" in the app drawer.

Liar! You are just impressive for a chick lol.

When I install a new rom (which happens monthly for me) using the wipe method, I usually format the internal SD - Nothing on there is needed. Just delete what you wish.

Some apps keep their stuff on Internal Memory, some keep it on the SD - Just have a browse through and you should be able to find what you /need/ to keep.

Yeah it is. Fortunately its free and so are the AU and NZ maps for us. Its a fairly comprehensive sat nav and I do like the included english ladies voice. Google beats it with the street view and voice intergration though.

If you're keen on it, just follow the two links I posted.  I downloaded MarketEnabler first, changed the code as advised in the first link.  Then I was able to see MobileNavigation (Navigon for Samsung) in the Market and it was free.  The maps took about 9 min or so to download via wifi.

And it's pretty cool using it.  Or maybe I'm just easily amused.

Forgotten: Wow, the video quality is really good, hadn't tried that yet.

My work was in the daytime video :), didn't realise you lived in Hamilton too.

Yes know your building :-) My brother (RIP) was there now and then managing the Hamilton branch of Yellow Pages.

Incidently, I work in the same building as your 123 Team. They had floors 4 5 6. Now just 5 and 6. We took over floor 4 when some of the work was transferred to Manila.

Small world Laughing

Haha yea very small world.

So have just finished flashing Doc's V6.2 XXJPY, going to flash the JK4 modem next then try get Swype working.

Once all that's done will restore contacts using Kies then try to progressively restore apps using Titanium backup.

Might be done sooner than I thought!

I suspect you're sleeping the day away (your night).  Here's the link from Doc's thread for the MTP application which is needed to talk to Kies.

Installing from CWM now, will see how it goes.

@wazz - I haven't taken too many calls on JK4 yet, but I'll report back once I've tested it a bit.

Navigon is really cool, I done the same as you Neets and took multiple detours on the way home, didn't miss a beat. It even knew where new roundabouts had been put in and told me about them. :D

Only just woken up, need to find something to flash my phone with tonight to keep me entertained!

edit: MTP still isn't working after installing the zip from that link :(. Checking from terminal I can see there's no usb_mtp_gadget in /dev which usually is present (it's the file you would change permissions on in Doc's earlier 2.2.1 ROMs to get MTP working).

Hm.. Something is still not right, though now that my contacts are backed up to my Gmail account I'm not overly concerned.

@Forgotten - I meant to say, I previously didn't really use my Gmail account.  What I did when I knew I was buying the phone was to export my contacts out of Outlook and then imported them into Gmail.  It's all done in one hit unlike you, painstakingly adding them one by one ;-)

Haha that definitely would've been easier! Unfortunately my brain doesn't function correctly that early in the morning, and all I had was time to kill anyway.

Will remember that for next time if it ever comes (I hope it doesn't).

I know you can never get enough of my battery updates.  Here's another.
Saturday night and Sunday night my battery was down around 21%.  This surprised me becuase I'd OC/UV my phone.  This morning my battery was sitting at 71%.  The difference I can see is that Saturday and Sunday there'd been after shocks in Christchurch and I'd spent about an hour during that time checking Twitter, Facebook, Geonet etc.  So there was an hour of usage.  That's all I can put it down to.

Today I've changed my modem to BUJP5.  Apparently this better battery life.  And then there's hardcore's discovery with the Wifi.  You can read that here.  I'm not convinced by the posts to that thread but watching to see what others report.  For all that, I can't really see any negative to flashing the Wifi from the earlier ROM.

And on a different matter.  I was reading another XDA thread (I'm starting to sound like I get around) from the Aussies who were discussing the official Froyo update that arrived late November.  They were commenting that Navigon was included.

Nice that the Aussie carriers look after their customers that way and they don't have to use the work around to grab the app like we have needed to.

I presume of course that the Froyo versions released in NZ don't include Navigon.  I'm happy to be corrected.

Just installed Navigon, found the apk file on XDA forum. Did a test run of the system, works well.
