Xt1ncT: So what's the verdict i9000 v desire?

I read a recent review if these 2 bs the iPhone 4, and the desire came first followed by iPhone then galaxy.

What do you guys think? I currently use iPhone 3G but am on the lookout for something else.

Ta

They aren't even in the same league.  What review was that? someone that has shares in HTC?

Galaxy far better screen, bigger and super amoled.  Desire has standard amoled which is almost impossible to see on a sunny day.

Galaxy full multitouch (not crippled like in desire)

Galaxy kills the desire in cpu and gpu performance and that is without even having froyo on it.

Galaxy has the potential to kill it in I/O.

They are different generation phones.
I came from a nexus one, I miss the trackball (for coloured notifications and the body)

I agree, I still like the Nexus one and my old Spica, but I can't get away from the Galaxy now, have Nova, Assassins creed HD and a few other games running + the HD recording.  Still not entirely sure on the slippery back, but that'll be fixed up when my case arrives next week...if it actually does arrive :( stupid EBAY

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Yeah, give the galaxy s a body like the nexus plus with the trackball and you would have a legendary phone.
Even if you dont use the trackball for navigation it was awesome for notifications, not having to turn the screen on etc.
The body of the nexus was great too, felt really solid.

I personally like the nexus more than the desire, the nexus was so close to being a superstar phone.....
If i had to choose from a desire or nexus id go nexus i think...

Can't get mms to work despite setting up as per instructions earlier in this thread. Anyone else has issues with this? Sending of mms just hangs. Do you get the green 'light' next to the pxt settings when it is set up correctly?

No you won't get a green light next to it, that is only for internet APN's.

OK here is a run down on the exact settings i have, if I don't list the setting it means you leave it blank.
Two APN's I have

number 1:
name: vodafone
apn: www.vodafone.net.nz
apn type: internet
mcc 530
mnc 01
authent type: none

number 2:
name: vodafone mms
apn live.vodafone.com
proxy: 172.30.38.3
port: 8080
server: http://pxt.vodafone.net.nz/pxtsend
mmsc: http://pxt.vodafone.net.nz/pxtsend
mms proxy: 172.30.38.3
mms port: 8080
mcc: 530
mnc: 01
authentication type: none
apn type: mms

if that doesnt work... then who knows, maybe vodafone are blocking you from using mms :)

Just adding something to the mix for people looking at getting a Galaxy S. I've had mine for a week or so now and the main thing i was concerned about was the build quality and the feel of the back plastic in particular.

Well... The phone doesn't creak, feels fantastically light and overall feels like a good quality device. True it doesnt have the feel of the Desire, but its not as bad as people make out - in fact I like it.

The screen is unbelievable. The colours are so well saturated and blacks are truly black. When you compare against an iphone 3g, it makes you wonder how you ever used an iphone!

As a former iphone user, i'm completely sold on the android system - i miss a few apps like Zenbu and Air New Zealand Mpass, but can live without them.

Cons at this stage are:

Lag - Yes it's laggy every now and then. Fingers crossed for Froyo, but the lag is nitpicking - its not as bad as the examples on Youtube.

Ringer Volume - If the phone is lying down, the sound is dramatically reduced.

GPS - doesn't get a signal as well as the iphone, particularly if you're undercover.

Hopefully that helps if you're tossing up making the move to a Galaxy.

I've heard a lot about it. It seems to do with the filesystem being used for the internal flash memory. I've seen hacks on the net to move parts of the system to a fast MicroSD, and that dramatically boost the smoothness of the interface.

Yeah I am using one of the hacks, moved my apps to the external memory card which is formated in etx4.
The performance difference is huge.  Will be interesting to see if samsung change their file systems and also the flags they set uon their file systems, they have some very easy ways to speed up their phone just by setting simple flags on the file system.

So my wife has had one of these phones for about a week, she sold her iphone 3gs to get one, she saw mine and loved the big screen very its very bright colours etc and she thought swype was pretty neat.
She is not a tech person but knows her way around phones pretty well.

Her thoughts after a week.

Lag is annoying, why does a newer phone with supposedly better specs has delays all over the place with the 3gs had none.

Camera sucks compared to the old iphone 3gs.  She used her old 3gs for snapping photos of out 1 year old son regularly.  With the samsung galaxy s most photos come out blurry and there is a bigger delay on the shutter.  The blurry photos  are a real pain, before she could just point and snap at our baby running towards here and it would be rare to get a blurry photo, now she is discarding 90% of the photos taken for her she wished she had stuck with the iphone 3gs.

Don't think she will be keeping this phone for long...

Why can't you edit your posts in these forums.. so annoying.
I really need to proof read what I write, I am used to being able to go back and correct things.
Silly not being able to edit posts, leads to outdated information being in posts or incorrect information etc.

Anyway, even with the lag fixes of copying data to external cards, I am noticing lag again, creeps in after a while of use, annoying really, now I'm annoyed with the camera too after my wife pointed out the flaws in it.

Now waiting for the next replacement for the samsung galaxy........

I like android but it is let down by hardware too often.
Nexus - crap touchscreen, and amoled just isn't useable outside on a sunny day

Galaxy - laggy and camera isn't so great, maybe the camera's tiny sensor is the issue and might be fixable with firmware etc.

Someone has to get it right eventually or Ill be joining my wife and getting an iphone heh (be it with a case to fix the antenna problem)

Nexus One - can you describe your experience with its touchscreen? I've heard some complaints, but not a lot. About using the phone outside on a sunny day, I don't think there are too many smart phones you can really use directly under the sun.

Galaxy S - I really hope cyanogenmod gets ported to this great phone, might not fix the camera issue, but I'm sure the lag problem will be solved. I know someone is already working on this, hopefully we'll see it done soon enough.

I'm still undecided between Nexus One and Galaxy S, both have pros and cons.

The nexus one uses a touchscreen called clearpad 2000, its basically very limited multitouch, pinch to zoom etc.
Try moving your finers around on the screen and it gets confused, it thinks your fingers are in completely different areas of the screen than they actually are.  There are lots of youtube videos showing this clearly.
The problems for me were that if I used two fingers to type on the nexus a lot of times it would get confused.
Also in some games it thought you had pressed in an area of the screen that your fingers were nowhere near.
Same screen was used in the desire too...
HTC has now stopped using this screen luckily.

If they had put a good touchscreen in the nexus... i would have loved it...

Of course the CPU/GPU in the galaxy is very fast.....but the lag kind of spoils that speed, even in some games, you get a moment of lag (i assume because something is going on in the background in the OS) because tha lag certainly isnt because of the cpu/gpu which is the fastest out there..

nexus or galaxy....tough one, id wait and see if samsung come up with the goods, they reckon froyo in august id wait until then and see how that fixes things. im sure they will release any lag fixes they can at the same time as the froyo upgrade, plus it sounds like the froyo upgrade will be without touchwiz so that could speed things up a bit too..

Can you give a linky to that hack please?
