Machpants: One thing that my phone misses is play/pause/FF/Rewind controls on the ear phones. Used it all the time with my N95... is there a SGS equivalent? My Nokia ones don't work :(.

This site has a whole heap of accessories some of which have music controls on them, sure if you look for them on the net you'll find somewhere to purchase from

kiwijunglist: you could also wait 6 months there should be some new releases just before christmas, and around that time Android 2.2 +/- 3.0 will be available.  Android just needs a little more time to mature...

Yeah, that is the thing with android phones they just keep pumping em out.  Great in some ways but terrible if you are one of the people that likes to have the latest, really bad for your bank account.  Also means they don't hold their value very well, iphones holds their prices pretty well because they only update once a year.

I mean the galaxy S2 is already being talked about for release late this year to come with android 3.0...
Now... do you wish you had waited for this instead of getting the galaxy? hehe

Highlights include:

  • 4.3" touchscreen with a 1280 x 720 resolution

  • 1GB of ram

  • 4GB of Rom

  • 32GB built in storage.

  • 2Ghz Processor - possibly dual core?

  • 8 mp camera - possible full HD video

  • Bluetooth 3.0

  • Wifi up to 'n'

  • Accelerometer with a possible Gyroscope

  • And of course Android 3.0 'gingerbread'!

Rumoured to be late this year ...... or early 2011...

Galaxy S2 is a false rumour.  The picture is watermarked by a samsung fansite, so the pic is probably a fan's mockup.  It was originally posted in a russian forum with no proof. 1 x website posted it as an article.other websites re posted the information and didn't check validity because it's in russian.  The same russian forum has done false rumours in the past.

Well even if it is, you know a device is going to be out that has specs like that by then anyway.
They aren't exactly that stunning the specs, many phones have some of them already apart from the resolution and cpu but we know dual core snaps will be out by then etc, I can easily phones with those kind of specs being here by xmas or early 2011. 1 gig of ram wont be an issue. already 8 megapixel cameras out there and 4.3 inch phones..

hmmm

Samsung are having trouble manufacturer the current S-Ameloid screens without being able to produce a new screen with this high res. There are no phones with 32gb. 4gb of rom is pretty excessive for android. fastest processers are around 1.2,1.4,1.6 still. look at how thin it is.

Lets wait and see.  The screen is doubtful at least in oled, doubt they can get it down to that resolution and manufacture it in time.
All the other specs are all  achieveable by then, anyway offtopic a bit.. but yeah in 6 months im sure the galaxy s will look like a dinosaur at least in the android world...

having said that, i hope it is true... I'd grab this phone, although i think 4" LCD is probably large enough already for my pocket and 1280x720 res is probably too high for 4" might as well run lower res, save money, cpu power, battery power.

Anyone know if there are any versions out there wth 3g 850?
Preferably 850, 900 and 2100

Am thinking about moving over to telecom but would be nice to have the vodafone frequencies too just in case..

Wish these phones would come out with quadband 3g like the iphone... wonder how many extra cents it would cost to make then quadband..

I read that it's because 850 + 900 are close together it is more difficult to have both

It is fine for me but Christchurch isn't a very demanding environment for GPS. It's definitely not as sensitive as my dedicated GPS as it can't get a lock inside, but it locks fairly quickly outside and I haven't noticed it losing the lock (have tried Copilot, Ndrive and Google Nav so far).

This thread lists all the threads with people have gps problems...
Seems to be quite an issue, definitely problems with the samsung galaxy s locking on, seems to get far weaker signals than other phones and cant seem to lock onto signals with a strength of less than 22...
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/104872-gps-issues.html

hopefully its a firmware issue and not a sensor issue....
who the heck tests these phones..

Yeah you cant use programs like that to test gps as they filter the gps signals and predict gps, so even if it loses signal they wont report it instantly and they snap you to the road etc..

But in one of the threads is one of the people that works for a company that makes the actual sensor used and he is saying there is a definite issue with the galaxy s...

bset program to use is gps test which shows realtime data unfiltered.. ive compared it to a couple of phones plus a dedicated garmin unit.. galaxy s really struggles...

edit:  also probably like the lag issue, some reported they didnt notice it so much but that might be just luck, the hardware is all the same, no one won a lottery and the factory put  special nand in their phone etc :)
some are reporting their gps worked fine for the first couple of weeks then just started having problems..

There are a few people who have tried the newest JW1 firmware saying the GPS is much better.
