So I'm running Darky's 9.0.2 atm. Apparently have to wipe to 9.2. Wonder if I should go to 9.2 or try out Doc's ROM which I'm kinda keen to do. Hmmm...

Man I wish I could find a decent place to get an OEM battery, either 1500mah or the new 1650mah that comes with the Galaxy SL, Galaxy Giorgio Armani and Captivate 4G

I have been using Doc's roms for the last month or so and have been very happy... I changed to Darky's 9.2 two days ago and I am very happy with it also.. Haha, not very definitive help I'm afraid.. I have not had any problems with the Darky rom whatsoever and the battery life is great.

You absolutely DON'T have to reflash everything - that's precisely why the kernel updates exist in a CWM form - just flash it like any other zip you select from your SD card - it takes all of 5 seconds.  You don't have to remove lagfixes either.  Too simple.

I didn't think for a minute that I'd have to flash everything.

What I'm not clear on is say for example I build a rom right now and choose Speedmod K12R, simply because thats the latest version available in the kitchen... Would I then flash the cooked rom (with R) then go and flash say K12T over that again?
Or can you inject T straight in without having to flash R in the first place?

I just want to minimise things and not worry about components that are defunct/out of date.

I've casually observed some conversations about how you can open the zip file, whip out what you don't want, add what you do (to the right directories) and then close the zip file.  But I haven't paid enough attention to feel comfortable saying that it's all that's required and it's safe as houses.  I'll ask in the #romkitchen, perhaps someone there knows for certain.

EDIT:  yes (in theory) you can.  But use 7zip.

Thanks Neets, this worked like a charm.

I cooked the rom with K12R, downloaded K12U (CWM) and then opened both with 7zip and deleted zImage from the rom and copied the one from speedmod into its place. Flashed it and it worked perfectly.

Impressions so far are good but its the first time I've done a titanium backup restore and I was not prepared for having to manually okay each app. I assume you have to get the pro version to do this unassisted?
I also lost all my txt messages. Nothing important (I hope), but if anyone has any tips on how I can avoid that happening again or tell me they are hiding sowewhere, I'd appreciate it.

I decided on GenX theme and I'm not sure I'll stick with it (definitely not in the default blue at least).
Nice to have idle battery drain back to mimimal again. Now I might be able to get through the day with it once more.

Great news.  Yes, the "donate" version of TB means all the apps you've selected will restore without any intervention from yourself.

I use SMS Backup.  That puts a copy of all my text messages into my Gmail account under a label SMS.

Thanks again, I'll look into getting both of those.

Do you know what directory the sms messages usually reside? Root explorer and google are conspiring against me.

Text messages aren't saved to the phone as best I understand.  I'm yet to refresh my memory on this new functionality, but under Menu | Privacy, do you have Back up my data and Automatic restore selected?  I'm wondering if that might have been a way.  Here's a link.  You might be able to put 2 & 2 together better than me.  It's not clear if the "application" might include your message app.

Pretty sure you can back them up through Titanium Backup.

They're saved in an Android database file, usually it's not a good idea to restore these across versions. However you can restore the data from Titanium by restoring "[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage", and "[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage" if you want the call log. The catch is you have to reboot after restoring to see the restored data.

The penny drops! I had sync off and hadn't updated it since flashing the rom. Just synced my gmail account and in it flowed!

New problem discovered though. The marketplace has lost track of all my apps. Root explorer is the only entry showing.

I guess this is why I like non-wipe updates so much.

I've heard of this happening to others.  I've never experienced it.  One of the suggestions others have said it to sign into GTalk.  That somehow kicks Google into breathing life into your gmail account and the market then shows all your apps.

Are you sure there's not two lists in AppBrain?  Sometimes the phone gets a new name and there's more than one list of applications.  Look at the top of the left navigation bar.

Thanks to Wazz and numfarr for the details about restoring the text messages. I've learning something new today :-D

So,

I'm currently running Doc's ROM (JS3) and Speedmod K12U kernel. As of a few versions of speedmod ago, I have encountered an occasional ~40 - ~1min stutter during music playback. I read earlier in the thread that someone else had a similar issue.

Anyone else experiencing this and perhaps knows of a fix?

Thanks for that. My APN (slingshot) did not get restored for some reason and I added it manually. I'll know where to look next time.

I think there might have been something funky going on with my marketplace version (which I restored from the titanium backup) Maybe darkyy fiddled with it...
I've synced with appbrain now and everything seems to be back the way it was.

Go team!

The Market only tracks paid apps. The free ones you have to record or back up or remember...or sync with App Brain.

I generally use Appmonster Pro. It backs up all the APKs of the free apps...and after I install a fresh system I just work my way down the list in the backup folder and re-install whatever I want. Only problem with that approach is the Market doesn't notify me of updates as it doesn't know I have it installed.....so it does remember something...somewhere.

Update: Thinking about it....I should test my assertion the market doesn't know. There have been a lot of changes in the Market.
