lofreq: FWIW, i researched the DamianGTO Ultimate kernel to try to understand the hype... and there didnt seem to be much to it. i know speedmod recommends ext4 as safe option because it maintains journals so if you have a powercut miduse (battery ripped out etc) you dont corrupt things. but i believe his kernel uses EXT2 which is non-journal and thus faster as its not writing as much everytime.

i emulated this in speedmod by setting filesystem to ext2 for DATA, CACHE and DBDATA, as well as the three _LOOP ones as well, and left the BIND to FALSE - this emulated the settings in the Ultimate kernel

also enabled all the recommended speedmod tweaks.

reboot and test, all is going well, for a couple of weeks now - i have hard-rebooted midboot and also done a battery pull midboot, with no problems. it is dead fast, and Quadrant sits on or exceeds 2000+

so anyway, thats my experience if it helps anyone contemplating lagfix settings, phone is like a rocket and still maintaining my 40hr average life between charges

i also spent some time testing the ZSJPG modem which is newer than the JL2 modem by 2 and a half months, assuming it may be better. turns out, the process to get it working is quite finnicky, requiring a 'staggered' flash of various modems before getting it to work on 850mhz xt band, and when it finally worked, performance was actually slower than JL2. everything just took longer to buffer and load, websites, images, etc. back to JL2 and things are nice and snappy again. so anyway, for XT users, it would seem JL2 is still the best modem.

Hi Lofreq,

I am currently on stock Telecom 2.2 and would really appreciate if you can do a new forum or reply to this one with detail walkthrough of upgarding...

Have been   out of this for quite some time due to chch quake but now really want to upgrade my phone... I understand you are very happy with your update and its everything is working fine including the GPS...

Would await your reply eagerly.

Regards, Ali

Neets: lokhor, I saw you posted your screen on the Android Homescreen forum.  What widget are you using to show the credit, number of text messages and data usage (or left?) from your account?

It's called 2Degrees Toolbox

That's pretty good service they have their own widget.  I haven't looked but I'm sure there's nothing for Vodafone.

Don't give 2degrees too much credit, the app is written by a guy with no affiliation with 2degrees. It gets the data by mimicking the HTTP calls made when using the website and giving the data back in a widget/app friendly form. Still very handy, especially seeing as i switched to 2degrees yesterday ;)

Oooh, do tell why you switched.  I know Vodafone as supposedly coming out with some great deals.  But from what I've read, it's for prepay customers.  I simply can not understand why they don't acknowledge the loyalty of on account customers and give them some deals too.  I don't know what carrier you were on prior to 2Degrees.

I've actually switched from Vodafone prepay to 2degrees contract. I don't really make many calls or send texts other than to my wife and family, my bill being only ~$20 + data costs. My wife and I are both on 2degrees now on their $29 contract which is just easier for us to manage and we can pull out any time. Just works out more efficient.

Oooh deals!!  Do tell!!  What have you heard?  I'm still prepay, but it does seems a little off that VF don't have an offer for post-paid.

Here's a link from another forum on Geekzone.  Seems they're doing their best to reduce the number of Voadfone customers jumping to 2degrees.

I was looking at the $29 plan mentioned.  Reckon it gives my hubby more than he has now for a few dollars less than he's paying a month on account.  Plus they're throwing in another 100minutes talk time if you go Monthly with them.  All that without having to sign up to any specific period/contract.

Indeed there is.  This.  Now, I wonder how long it'll take to actually install the app on my phone.

Edit: Showed the download icon. That's finished.  Nothing to say it's downloaded. Not in Apps and long press to add a widget doesn't show it either.  It's magic!

Edit x 2:  Downloaded a 2nd time and it worked.  Nice little app.  Looks tidy too.  Would be nice to show BestMate stats.  Happy with the app.  Nice job to the dev.

For anyone that's interested I tried JFS out, I'm pretty sure I'd say in the short time I used it that is was the on par with ext2(I can't tell the difference). Apparently it's good on battery but didn't really use it long enough to conclude on this. Bugs are pointed out over at xda: it reverts to to the UK as the country every boot(Found this not such a big prob) and apparently if you let the phone turn off from low batt it corrupts your data and you need to reflash, yay! Didn't have the guts or reasoning to try this though. It seemed quite stable and had no issues with it but I changed back to ext2 which is nearly as fast; questioning JFS's reliability
