7nz: Hey guys

I've read a lot of this thread but I'm overwhelmed by the amount of info so I'm hoping you can help me out.

Basically I would like to know 2 things:
1) I want to try a new ROM from http://romkitchen.org and I need a recommendation on what combination to use.
2) How to apply it to the phone.  Odin?

Current details:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy i9000 16Gb / I9000DXJPA
Model: GT-I9000
Network: Vodafone
CSC: I9000OLBJPA
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I9000DXJPA
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 root@SE-S604 #1
Build: FROYO.DXJPA

TIA

7

all the links to info you are asking about are in the first post of the Rom Kitchen thread

Hi 7nz,

Whether you can use a custom ROM will depend on what version of the recovery is on your phone - you'll probably have the 3e recovery, which only allows the use of signed .zip files.  If that's the case, the first thing you'll need to do is download a custom kernel (I'd recommend Hardcore's Speedmod from here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756

You'll need an XDA login to download it - make sure you get the one for Odin, NOT for CWM.

Pushing this onto your phone via Odin will give you the necessary 2e recovery from which you can flash a custom ROM, and will also give you root access, teak & lagfix options and a few other goodies.

In terms of the ROM, I'd definitely Doc's ROM's - his kitech is here:

I'd suggest the latest base rom, the VNZ CSC file, and importantly, the BUJP5 modem, which seems to give the best performance/battery life for Vodafone users.

Before you do any flashing however, you have a LOT of reading to do, so you're sure you know what you're getting into.

SGSIII
ROM: WanamLite v1.3    Kernel: Ninphetamine v1.1.0   Modem: DXLEA

SGSII (Now belongs to SWMBO)
ROM: WanamLite v12     Kernel: Siyah v3.3.2   Modem: BVLPB

If you need a download-mode jig ASAP, you're welcome to borrow mine!  Works with SGS I/II/III.  I also have a SIM cutter available (Dunedin) - happy to post either to you at your cost.

A while back now I had put on z4 to root and OCLF as a lagfix.  I accidentally unrooted on z4 and am unsure what do before I attempt any flashing.  Help?

Given what you have said, you don't need to worry about that.

First, you need to verify that you can get to the 3 key download mode. Turn the phone off, wait a minute, then hold in the volume down, and home buttons. While doing this, hold in the power button. Quickly - within 10 seconds - the download mode should appear. A yellow triangle, etc.

If it does appear, you are OK and may proceed to using ODIN to flash speedmod kernel to your phone; instructions are on the i9000 development forum of xda developers.

If it did NOT appear, and you tried several times patiently and properly, you have one of the phones that was supplied with a faulty download mode. A known and admitted fault from samsung, denied by the NZ branch out of ignorance and stupidity however. Anyway, if this is the case, you need to flash the appropriate fix to the phone. This carries some extra risk as a stuff up could stuff your phone nicely and you'd have to return it to samsung. SO READ XDA CAREFULLY FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF MESSAGES FIRST. I'll not be held responsible, your own risk, etc. lol.

Anyway, thousands have done this perfectly well, and benefitted greatly from the increased reliabilitym speed, and features of a custom rom.

(I was going to use fu-k up above, but apparently this web site is scared it might offend someone. Pity.)

Ok, so I can get into download mode. Will flashing the speedmod kernel wipe anything at this stage? Am I to use the link nofam has listed? Thanks for your help so far guys!

It shouldn't wipe anything much. You should flash it with Odin 1.5 or newer older versions are faulty. It will give you enhanced features and cwm - which will allow you to flash any zip cwm ROM like the ROM kitchen. Instructions are on xda in the i9000 development section. Look for the first post in the doc thread or whatever ROM you want to try. It'll have [ROM] in the title. Keep away from the gingerbread ones for now - unstable.

I personally use ultimate 8.2 at the moment, with the ultimate kernel. Its fast and capable.

It looks like Gingerbread might be out officially. There is a version of the manual for Gingerbread available for download from the Samsung Mobile UK site. And if I plug my phone into Kies 2 it tells me that 'this version cannot be upgraded' instead of 'you have the latest version' (I'm running Docs Rom JPJ base).

Has anyone else run out of space on their internal sd? I don't know what to do. Mine is filled up with gameloft games so I can't just move them to the external without some trick to make the games think they are in the same place.

I'm only excited about the JVB official release because it means Samsung will release the source within a couple of a weeks. I won't be flashing until there is a new version of Speedmod kernel out as I can't live without Voodoo sound, sharpness enhancements, and brightness tweaks.

Well-said. . . .tbh there's not much about Gingerbread that excites me, so it take a special ROM to move me off Doc's JPJ!!

I'm still on XWJS8 due to the theme incompatibilities of the Asian roms. Using Speedmod K13E and it's pretty sweet with Vooodoo sound V7

JVB will be in the Beta kitchen our tonight.  And Voodoo sound works in it.  ChainFire has a kernel, as well as fugu and I thought I'd spied that there is a Speedmod kernel too.

And there's this link, which I've not read fully yet.  Cyper_X said to go with the bootloaders first (which you can get from Perka's stash), then Speedmod then JVB.

A little clarity, SM kernel is just to provide root access.
