lokhor: How many of you guys are on Gingerbread btw? I'm thinking of flashing back to JS8 - GB has very few advantages, has worse 3d performance (and some 3d games don't even work) and without Speedmod kernel all of the text and colours look off (halos around the letters)

I'm still on GB, I haven't had any problems with 3D performance and the only game that currently doesn't work is NFS Shift, and to be honest I haven't noticed anything wrong with text and colours being 'off'. It's been about a month since I went from Froyo and so can't really compare speed, but when I first changed to stock JVB I did remember it being much smoother than JS8 on ext4(probably was a placebo effect).

What games aren't working for you?

NOVA doesn't work just has a blank white screen. If you came from Hardcore's Speedmod kernel you'd notice the text is all fuzzy around the edges and colours look off. trying Fugukernel to see if its any better

I got 45.7fps

I did come from a Speedmod kernel and I can't say I noticed a difference. I might actually go back to Doc's JS8 just to see the difference.

i dont have halos around my text - i have a matte screen protector tho maybe it masks the effect? but i havent seen results as horrible as you describe. color seems fine too. altho agreed JS8 is alot more refined - i havent had any issues with games yet either

i think all your problems are like amplified x100 for you than anyone else lol

to top it off check this out i just realised i havent charged my phone in ages:

72+ hours and still going lol this is with 3hrs30min screen on, 9hr40min wifi, bunch of voice calls, txt, rah rah - i did not play any robodefense tho, which obviously helped - new record for me, never seen it chug along for this long! madness

hows that lol ;p

im quite sure now that this damiangto 2.0 kernel has bigger idle drain than beta7 - when this dies im gonna reflash with 2.1 kernel and see how that flies

How do I update to the latest? will it stop my phone working on vodafones network etc?

the latest builds are "unofficial" and custom prepared roms. to install a custom rom on your phone you use either a custom flashing program like Odin 1.7, which will allow you to flash ODIN prepared roms

or you flash roms using Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM), using CWM prepared roms

generally the Odin method is used for upgrading a phone with a BASE rom, and then you can use CWM subsequently for further finetuning updates.

because this is all custom, nothing is simple and straightforward as plugging in a phone and pressing an "update" button - and there is tons to learn before things make sense, so there is no one sentence answer for "how do i update"

it unfortunately means you will have to do alot of reading before understanding what exactly is going on here...

i wrote a bunch of basics a couple of pages ago so it would pay for you to read this first to understand the mechanics of what youre trying to do:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=62267&page_no=354#466162

then i would suggest you have a thorough read of this thread which should introduce you to Odin and flashing a base version of gingerbread onto your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047924

i would also start reading as much as you can on that XDA forum to get up to speed because otherwise your questions will actually be too hard to answer! :D

go have a read and try that thread and let us know how u go

Hey,

Flashing a new rom will not stop your phone from connecting to Vodafone, however you may need to set up the APN again and if you flash a custom rom you will need to reinstall your apps (Titanium Backup helps with this)

If you want to just get the latest stock Rom it's fairly simple: connect to Kies and check for an update. I'm unsure what the latest official version is as I haven't used Kies in ~6 months.

If you want to flash a custom rom with different themes, battery icons and lockscreens etc I think the easiest way is to follow this process:

  1. Follow this guide to cook a custom rom: http://www.androidguys.com/2011/01/19/captivate-galaxy-s-rom-kitchen/

  2. I suggest XWJS8 with VNZ CSC and BUJP5 Modem - all else you can choose which apps etc

  3. Copy the Rom your phone's internal sdcard

  4. Select a theme from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=898892 and put it on your phone's internal sdcard

  5. Get Odin V1.7 and flash Speedmod K13E Kernel from download mode: guide found here: http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html (make sure you get the Odin Galaxy S version of the kernel with file extension .tar)

  6. You should be able to boot using this custom kernel. after that turn your phone off and do the following to get into recovery mode:

  7. Hold Vol Down + Home + Power - once the SGS Icon displays let go of the power but don't let go of vol + home - you should see a green menu appear and can navigate using volume buttons and press back button to select items

  8. go to install zip from sdcard and find the rom file on your sdcard that you copied earlier.

  9. After this you should see it install and if it doesn't reboot automatically afterwards just navigate the menu till you find the reboot option.

  10. After a successfull boot, turn the phone off again and go back into recovery mode as per step 7 - this time install zip from sdcard and select the theme you had put on the sdcard earlier

  11. after reboot you should have a very fast and nice looking rom.

  12. if you want to install a lagfix or put some other tweaks on you can find these in the recovery menu.

This is just my process for installing a fast and stable rom - other people may have different preferred roms or ways of doing things.

I don't know how you get such insane battery life. I flashed FuguKernel and it's a little better but the text still looks a little worse than Speedmod. I think I just have sharp eyesight so notice these things more. I'm going to give Gingerbread a couple more days and if I still don't like it then switch back to JS8.

So I went back to JS8 for fun and honestly it felt just as good and smooth, I tried nenamark and and got 41.7fps and it looked quite choppy too. I didn't see any difference in the text or colour. So the only downside for me is that I may find some apps that aren't compatible with GB- eg NOVA. All in all I feel I'll stick to GB.

That's really strange. Using JS8 I get ~50fps using Nenamark, are you sure there wasn't anything running in the background?

On JVH using DamianGTO Kernel I was getting ~43fps @1200mhz OC and now with FuguKernel I'm getting  45fps still a lot lower than my JS8 scores. The one thing I do like in JVH is that scrolling is a lot smoother.

Yeah, I made sure no apps were running with the built in Task Manager but some system app could have been doing something. I'm on JVH now so I can't retest but I took the same procedure with a fresh flash of JVH and got 49.5fps, and when using the clear memory button in the GB task manager I get 51fps; this is on CF-Root.

Argh now I can't play HAWX or Modern Combat 2 - it says my copies are not legit :( Also Gameloft site apparently has no record of what I've purchased and cos I got them on promotion 2 for $7 I don't appear to have received an order email regarding them either. I think I'm going back to Froyo..
