lofreq:
mrgsm021: Just flashed to ZSJV5 2.3.3, stock Asian ROM with SpeedMod K15G-T11-300Hz kernel.

Couple of questions please:

      • GB is suppose to improve battery life or better battery management, is JuiceDefender still necessary?

      • Can I still flash to the Vodafone BUJP5 modem on GB? Although so far having seen any issues on the JV5 modem, so not in a hurry to change.

Juice defender and things like Task Killers etc were never necessary from froyo - unless you are a really heavy user in a poor signal area. otherwise for the most part the processes it uses in memory turning your radios on and off can be more detrimental than you just toggling it yourself. all in all i believe it is "unnecessary" unless you find you are only getting 10hours use from your phone stock

and yes you can safely flash froyo modems over your GB roms, without drama - also yes, new modems does not automatically mean greater performance - they might not be best suited to the network strength here in nz, or your area, so you will have to test them out and monitor your signal strength using a widget and see how it performs

Thanks lofreq for your response, since I have only just flashed to the new ROM yesterday, I will see how it goes in terms of battery life. Also I have a Voda 2100 cell site about 10 metres from my house, so full reception at home always.

Again with the BUJP5 modem, will let the new ROM settle down and see, but good to know I can just flash it on GB without dramas, I have the CWM zip file in my external SD so I can flash it anytime.

Hoping to get SGS2 at the end of the month so won't be with the SGS for too much longer.

Oblivian: I'm not as brave as you lot when I get a $600 toy so not too keen to go flashing out of official/warranty/spec yet :P

But out of interest I got a generic model from DSE au when I was there some weeks ago. Unlocked out of box with the following FWs:

PDA I9000DTJP5
PH: I9000DTJP3
CSC: I9000XSAJP4

Indicates an asian parallel import like DSE nz had some time ago? Bonus was its a late packaged model with Froyo out of the box.

Have that queer Simtoolkit icon bug that most VFNZ guys report but meh.

Nice toy so far. Just a shame the more you play with it the flatter the battery gets over a 12hr period :) I miss my 4 days between charging and 4hr cell calls. But get toys in exchange for it!

If you follow the good guides and don't do anything crazy then the chances of bricking are very slim.  Even then there's hope with JIG's etc. But read everything twice before you do it! I was very anti when I first used ODIN but since then it's become a lot easier.

Should also try the BUJV3 modem that came with the voda specific BUJV9 ginger rom.  I think SpeedMod kernel is still using ClockWorkMod 2.5 so the old modem.zips should work ok, but they may not work with CWM3 - if it doesn't you wont stuff anything up - it will just give you an error.

nofam: So a couple of people are saying that 2.3 is up on Kies for VFNZ SGS owners - can anyone confirm that?

I just plugged mine into KIES and it has indicated that a new firmware is available.  My SGS was a NZ new unit purchased from Noel Leeming last year.

Current firmware version:  PDA:JP3 / Phone: JP2 / CSC: JP3 (VNZ)
Latest firmware version:  PDA: JVH / Phone: JV1 / CSC: Jv1 (VNZ)

Will try and update shortly.

Thanks for the suggestion on the BUJV3 modem, will search for it and download it into my external SD just in case. YOu are right, the Speedmod kernel is still on CWM 2.5, so should have no issues flashing the modem.

I flashed FuguMod 4.0 from 3.9 and ended up stuck in a bootloop today :( I reflashed a stock JVO rom and now back to Simply Honey 3.5 until something better comes along. I am going to try Speedmod K15G now though.

pooky: I read that gingerbread (2.3.4) has started to show up again in Kies for some people in the UK on samsunggalaxysforums, if you have a parallel imported phone which is an unbranded SGS on froyo would Kies ever offer firmware updates? I don't really expect it to, but it would be much easier than flashing a custom ROM with Odin.

I'm kinda tempted to give Juwe's or Darkys ROMs a go, and may end up doing that anyway but it'd be interesting to try samsungs vanilla gingerbread too.

I just checked on Kies tonight and it says theres a firmware update available, JVH. So looks like even my parallel import will get the gingerbread treatment no worries. Will give it a go tomorrow

A guy at work updated his stock VFNZ SG-S to JVH today and loves it so far.

I tried it via Kies, but I have JPY (KOR) on mine and it won't upgrade.

I was thinking of fiddling with the registry to make Kies think I have JP3....Or I may just flash Cyanogen Mod 7.3....and go off the reservation entirely.

I'm getting that old firmware flashing feeling again. It's been a while.

Update: Ok...I've used Super One Click to root the phone and installed Rom Manager. Now to have a lurk around.

Update 2: Great....there is supposedly an i9000 and an i9000 (MTD). Of course no one anywhere says what MTD means....Grrr.

Update 3: OK...so I have the 3e recovery and can't install Clockwork Recovery because 3e checks for a signature that Clockwork Recovery can't provide. I'd have to flash back to a kernel with the 2e recovery.

Not tonight. But at least my phone is rooted now. :-)

It's worth it, everything was way snappy, think iPad snappy ( maybe even better actually ), though the facebook app turned the galaxy s into a sluggish piece of c**p.

you guys that wait around for updates via Kies are crazy :) but ok i do remember what i used to be like when first starting out. once you get a bit more time to try out things like odin and CWM you will never need to wait again

agreed about the facebook app, its the most terribly coded nonsense ever. ive never used it, and have always used the facebook mobile site which has been improved tenfold over the time ive been using it... best part is you can have facebook open while tabbing to other sites instantly just like your normal firefox/IE - no time wasted switching between apps etc - so much quicker to use
