It came sealed as well, so definitely original and brand new. Much better than the pre-opened stuff often sold at stores here in NZ.

Well, I've just spent an hour or so playing with the Samsung Galaxy S after giving it an initial charge.

My old phone was an iPhone 3G.

I don't have time right now to do a full review but my initial impressions of the Galaxy S are:

Phone / hardware
- Man, this thing is light!
- Not sure how much thinner the battery cover could be...
- Although it is light... build quality appears good.

Screen
- OMG the screen is amazing.
- I've not seen the iPhone's retina display yet but the Super AMOLED on the Samsung is excellent.
- My eyes are tripping out right now, I didn't realise screens had improved so much since my iPhone 3G.

Android
- Looks good.
- Responsive and fast... big improvement over iPhone 3G with iOS4
- Seems easy enough to use.
- Overall I think it'll be nice to "think different" after the iPhone.

Time will tell to see if I fall in love with Android. I suspect over the coming days I'll miss some things from the iPhone but right now, this is a nice change.

Is the switching between pages meant to be slightly laggy compared to the apple equivalent or did I just play around with a faulty unit.

Went to Parallel imported to have a go with the Galaxy. First impressions it looks impressive but I did find switching between and pages and scrolling to be not as fluent as the iPhone.

Its a fairly widespread issue unfortunately. I'm glad now that my initial attempt at purchasing this phone fell through. At this point it does seem like the pick of the bunch, but it also seems to be a bit halfbaked.

There are now rumours that Samsung are holding back stock and are addressing the lag and GPS issues (that unfortunately suggests hardware if that rumour holds any water). Some are also suggesting we will see the phone offered through official channels very shortly too. The Samsung NZ site says Android 2.1 (could just be placeholder specs) but I'd perfer to skip over any stock that doesn't come with 2.2 out of the box. That might take till the end of September or beyond, but at this point I think it would be worth waiting and seeing.

I popped in there yesterday as well.

They had 2 16GB units at over $1,200, so I decided to give it a miss. Especially when as mentioned above they still have lag and GPS issues.

I guess we will see. But they can't say they haven't had time to iron this stuff out. Everyone thought that Froyo was going to be the fix-all solution to all these quirks but that doesn't seem to have been the case at all.

New update out today for LauncherPro Plus. Now has a very nice calender widget. I miss Sense less and less with every update.

Other thing in this update is Swipe actions. Basically if you swipe upwards from one of your shortcuts on the bottom of the screen you can have it perform various actions, including opening a second app from the same shortcut. For example swiping up on my app drawer icon opens settings, messaging opens email, contacts opens the dialler etc. Really nice function, lets me keep my homescreen super clean but still retains quick access to my most used features.

I'd go so far as to suggest that all Galaxy S users should be using LauncherPro...

I've noticed the GPS issue myself... trying to decide whether it is a deal breaker for me or if I trust Samsung to provide a fix.

I've not noticed problems with lag though, software seems really fast and smooth....
