seriously:
fahrenheit:
seriously:
kiwijunglist: Standard procedure for mobicity is to open the box, turn the phone on for testing (including inserting a SIM) +/- unlocking prior to sending.

I have no idea what they did there exactly.

Selecting 'Automatic' at the top of the menu (before the selection of COMBI BANDS) gave me the same as you, all but the 850 WCDMA with the *.

I wonder where it pulls those from (if it polls the network its currently connected to or references the firmware) and what would happen if you popped in an XT sim and disabled all the GSM entries and 900 WCDMA and enabled 850...

If I had an XT sim card I would try it for you, unfortunately I don't. Surely someone else has one and can try though?

:edit: Realised why mine weren't on by default...I had had enable 2g only (for 'saving battery'), taking that off puts the default to [automatic] and has the same as what I posted before, all but the WCDMA850 selected.

Nah definitely doesn't work, tried it last month when it was on the XDA-developers thread :) won't pickup XT at all.  But...hopefully it's just the radio firmware, if only someone was brave enough just to flash the 850mhz Radio firmware.  I would if I had a spare phone, but at the moment.  Original thread was here:

I wonder if it is just the phones setup for WCMDA850 that have the extra bands? Could explain why there is a price difference and also a shortage... (ie. possibly uses same chipset as iphone 4?)

It appears that the only confirmed successful use of the 850MHz band on a phone that didn't have it set out of the box was for a T-Mobile Vibrant (being used on AT&T's network).

Unfortunately, thats the model that has the 1700MHz AWS support and is likely a completely different radio chipset.

I am planning to order through Clove at the moment, I am going to get it sent via International Mail as apposed to DHL courier as they seem to have a lower hit rate with GST at the border.

Just waiting for the exchange rate to work a little more in my favour before I place the order Tongue out

I ordered through Clove and used DHL delivery option. Had to pay GST - not Customs Duty - which was collected by DHL before they would deliver.

Used Royal mail got hit with the usual gst of 12.5% + ITF which applies to anything which has GST on it.  You might avoid it, DHL has higher GST/Tax because they incorporate the ITF fee into it($38 on mine).

It's basically russian roulette, either you'll get charged, or won't

Going by the exchange rates, best time to have brought would have been July 26th. It is now at its highest in the last 120 days. I think I will wait till it drops before buying, save a bit of money!

Mine was $871.XX on the 2-4th of August (8gb version without SD card); didn't get customs/gst on top either.

Hey guys, I've been reading this forum for years now but have only just got signed up. I've read almost all of this thread, and it's got some great info. From what I've read it seems that Clove is the safest online retailer to buy a Galaxy S? I see some members have purchased their phones from mobicity, but they seem much more expensive there!

Cheers
Tom

I think clove - gst < mobicity , but clove + gst > mobicity.

Mobicity has local 12 month warranty with service centre in NZ.  I may of read that clove does 2 years ???? - but you will have to post it to the UK and possibily pay for return postage.  Also mobicity has option to upgrade warranty to 24 months.

I paid $909NZD from mobicity incl VISA fee / currency exchange fees. You do not need to pay gst when you order from mobicity.
