jaymz: if u tell me what i need to do to tell you then let me know. I suspect it's european because the keyboard only has european languages and didn't list any asian languages.

I thought Mobicity service was great, phone arrived in 3 days.

SGS 8GB version, with a free car charger only cost me $858 all up including CC fees.

Hi,

Well just a GPS update.

A partial fix was rolled out to some of our american friends the other day on one of their versions.
The fix has been copied over to the regular galaxy s also (hack by users not by samsung)
This fix allows the phone to finally lock onto more than 8 satellites and also finally allows it to lock onto weak signals.

Before it was unable to lock onto anything less than about 22 SNR i think and couldnt use more than 8.

Unfortunately the accuracy of the GPS is still nasty when compared to other phones especially given the GPS chipset being used in this phone (bcm4751 - one of the best)

The heat is really being turned up on Samsung over the issue now though as many are starting to use it more and realise that even though they thought it was ok to start with it fails nastily in some circumstances.

Samsung UK have announced a proper fix will be ready in September.
Samsung in the USA have told the carriers there the same thing.

Endgadget have started calling it "GPS-gate"
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/samsung-galaxy-s-gps-gate-two-problems-not-one-and-what-to-do/

Endgaget were a bit slow to finally work it out - none of the user fixes fix the issue and there are a couple of issues with the GPS but at least they got there now and now Samsung are very aware of the situation and the media attention it is getting especially in the UK and the states.

Anyone that is thinking of buying this phone, if GPS is important to you I would recommend waiting until september just to make sure that the fix that is coming really does fix it.

I used to have a Nokia N95 and it must have been broken because it too would never lock onto GPS either. So moving to the Samsung Galaxy S and seeing it not work was more of the same to me. I suppose if you moved from a Desire then you maybe more disappointed than I was.

There's an official update on Kies for those people who want to keep things official. It's JM1 now has a task manager.

I don't think JM1 touches the GPS does it?  As far as I know only the the american variants got some sort of attempt at fixing the GPS but the accuracy is still way off even in that fix.
I was using the leaked jm1 now on leaked jm5 but that doesnt allow locking of more than 8 or weak SNR's.

OR was that just a separate comment aside from the GPS issue?

How did the kies update go? a lot of people are struggling with kies in forums.
Apparently it wipes the phone too.. does a factory reset..something to be aware of.

Separate issue. People ask me if the phone goes quicker after the update and I say yeah, probably because it has no apps or data now. But no dramas, google and facebook know all my contact details these days. I do miss all my ebooks though.

I see samsung apps store has a couple of new apps. Want happy that the radio one is just a demo version.

Have mine connected to an exchange server through owa. No problems, all using out of the box functionality.

I can assure you most definitely that your GPS is not perfect.  Give me 5 minutes with your phone and I can show you how bad the GPS is.
They are all flawed which is why samsung are trying to get fixes out for it.

The flaws might now show up so badly in NZ  using car navigation programs.

Anyway good to see Samsung are still trying to fix it.  Will be interesting to see what September brings.. Froyo and GPS fix :)
THey might even throw in a new file system to get rid of the lag..
