Hi - This might be already known to some people here, but just discovered today that if you swipe left or right on missed phone numbers or frequently called numbers in the phone log, it either texts or phones depending on which was you swipe.  Its a very handy shortcut!

Yeah, it is handy - although when I first went to that list, I tried deleting/clearing items by "swiping to delete" (iphone was still fresh in my mind). Ooops... ended up calling people.

you can also swipe left or right on the name in the messages screen, to call/msg someone.

Also - if you swipe horizontally along the top of the notification panel you can adjust the brightness.

Some press release from Corning received today:

Corning Supplies Gorilla Glass for Samsung Galaxy S Premium Smartphone

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), a world leader in specialty glass and ceramics, announced today that Corning Gorilla glass has been designed into the Samsung Electronics Galaxy S, a newly released premium smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S features a four-inch super AMOLED display, while weighing roughly 119 grams in a slim, highly durable design. The enhanced super AMOLED display is enabled in part by using Corning Gorilla glass as the protective cover. Gorilla glass is an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass that is both scratch resistant and durable.

BJ Kang, senior manager of Samsung Electronics said, “Advanced display technology plays a crucial role in meeting consumers’ growing expectations on high-end mobile devices, especially smartphones. Corning’s Gorilla glass has helped maximize Galaxy S’s unique smartphone features by enabling a high-quality touch display.”

Haeng Hee Lee, president of Corning Korea Company Ltd added, “Device makers are challenged with designing stylish yet durable products. The Galaxy S is a fine example of a premium device created through the combination of Corning’s specialty glass and Samsung’s mobile display technologies. Corning’s Gorilla glass enables device makers to introduce durable display products with innovative designs.”

More than 20 major makers of PC and handheld devices have already recognized the benefits of Gorilla glass by designing it into more than 225 devices, and more than 55 models will be released over the next six months.

Neets:

Just got my Galaxy S today but it wont download any apps.

Hi, I've been lurking for a few weeks.  Thanks everyone, I've picked up so much just watching and listening.

Did it take 2 weeks from the time your ordered from Mobicity for the phone to arrive?  What was the delay, they imply it'll be about 5 or so days.

Still unsure if I'll order from Unlocked Mobile or Mobicity.  The price at Mobicity went up twice over a week, a total of $100.

Cheers

It was "In Stock" when i ordered it.
Next day i got an email saying it was on backorder.
Took a week from that to arrive so not to bad.

Cost around $900 in total i think.

I just received my Samsung Galaxy S I9000 today and am using it as I charge it. I dialed *#1234# to see that I have the following firmware:
PDA: I9000XXJF3
Phone: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000OXAJF3

Can someone please tell me which firmware I should be upgrading to so that I have the most recent and least laggy firmware.

Cheers

Go for  jm5 or even jg5, I see jm6 just got leaked today also but no news on it yet.
JM5 adds a few things like the task manager etc and some extra samsung apps.

Don't bother with the froyo builds yet, buggy.

They will all lag a bit though without the lag fixes and probably everyone has their own different opinion on which firmware is best.

I think you need to use Odin? (I haven't tried yet)

Anyone know if there is a way to do firmware updates using a pc with ubuntu or a mac?

I upgraded from JF3 (UK stock firmware as supplied by Unlocked Mobiles in the UK) to JM1 via Kies last night. It might depend on what region/location choices you made when you set up.  JM1 is the latest (and only) firmware version that has been available to me via Kies. All other versions are leaked versions for which you have to use Odin or similar.
