@Torquenstein: many potential issues there, my suggestion would be quick search at Androidforums GS threads, and the same at XDA-Developers, lots of posts about issues and various fixes. First thing would be to connect with USB debugging mode on (in Settings --> Applications --> development), that fixed it for me since it then installed the drivers. Since then I've not really used Kies at all though to be honest.

Torquenstein: Hi guys

Total android noob here, just got my first smart phone today.

How the heck do I get Kies to recognise it? I have changed the usb connection settings to " ask for connection" but it just sits there at connecting the device.

Any ideas on what to do?

If you search the GZ forums for 'Kies' you will find several answers to this but have a look at these posts:

snowsteve: I guess im abit worried if i cant use a hardware button combo to put me into download mode - what happens if my flash turns pear shaped as i wont be able to get into DL mode again.

how common are mis-flashes so to speak, in specific flashing to xfjm6 .

It's not just flash problems, it's possible to screw up booting in any number of ways when you are messing around with patches, so I would not flash without a working three-button download mode. I would try to return the phone and get one with a working download mode. There is this bizarre thread where they say that heating the device up to 60 degrees enables download mode??? Not recommended!

haha yeah i saw that one, people putting the phones in the oven.

I also read that samsung had said the 3 button download mode was not deliberately disabled and that later firmwares would bring it back.. but that hasnt been confirmed and could be a load of....

but yeah without the download mode it makes it a whole lot more risky...

I tried all sorts of manners with debugging mode, unmounting sd cards and what not, nothing seems to help. just sits there connecting.

What do you gain with using kies? I am so new to all this, how do I update android without it? Or is that when you have to get into rooting and flashing? How do I do backups?

So annoying..

Yeah i read about that last night, not going to happen lol, i wonder what or how the download mode is disables and if there is a way of re enabling it from a service mode or something.

Anyway i guess flashin is on the back burner now until a suitable solution is found, i dont want to send it back and really what would i say "hi i want to flash with custom roms and i cant with this phone" haha probably not going to fly.

i may wait for froyo in the off chance after flashing it re enables the mode..

Cheers for ya help

I'd been able to connect just fine, then one day I couldn't.  I asked the question and you'll find 4 possible answers as to why I could no longer connect through this thread:

Maybe one of those might be the answer to your problem.

Hi,

What f/w are you on? (apologies if I missed it earlier in the thread).  Reason I ask, you can update to JM1 via kies if you use the reg hack.  This doesn't use test mode so is pretty safe.  Let me know if you need a link to the EU reg hack.

JM1 is pretty solid (if you are not using this already that is.)

Flashing with Odin is much easier, and quick too, I'd suggest going for that (its what nearly all of us have done) - but I'd look into how to sort out the recovery issues first.

It would be hard for him to use odin if he can't get into download mode now wouldn't it.

That is the whole issue...

I have seen quite a few posts of people with the JG4 firmware that cannot get into the download mode, i will not be flashing until there is a hardware solution for getting to the dl mode, otherwise i may have a pricey paper weight :)

There has been talk on a few forums that it will be fixed with the Froyo release ~ so at this stage all i can do is wait..

Doh! *slaps forehead* Sometimes 5 broken hours of sleep after a 10 hour shift finishing at 2am just doesn't make for sensible forum commentary!

There are some threads on xda about the DL problem, and about alternative things you can do etc... I'm sure you have already read it and I can't remember what it said, but I mention it just in case.

Interesting, apparently Samsung Canada has release a statement acknowledging the issue with the disabled download mode and will be releasing an update shortly, could be good news..
