ranton: Hmmm tempted to try it... but wondering if its possible to revert to the New Zealand Specific firmware any way?

This reply wont be much help, but I understand it's possible to take a backup of your existing ROM.  I've got ROM Manager installed (from the Market).

My understanding, looking at the options, you can take a backup of your existing ROM (and later restore to it).  That's what it sounds like you want to do.

Now you just have to find someone who can give you a straight answer ;-)

vodafone shops here know nothing... would have to go to MFR or Brightpoint... they or some other mobile repair outlet but no one seems to have the stock firmware on file.. and there is not Restore functionatlity in Kies.. like there is in itunes for the iphone..

how are you finding JPK on your NZ handset?

----

I think the rom is the OS operating outside of teh Firmware.. not sure..

Why i ask about restoreing the stock firmware.. is taht i have installed the voodoo lag fix.. and the onlyway that you can completely remove it is to do a restore

Just downloaded JPK today.. kinda keen to test it.. but worried that when Froyo does actually come i wont be able to update it to the NZ Firmware via kies

@ranton - voodoo lag fix, has an uninstall feature, no need to do a restore.

yes.. it disables itself.. when you place a folder called
"disable lagfix" in the voodoo folder..

however if you remove the folder it re instates itself...

I uninstalled the Voodoo lag fix (when flashing back to my Optus firmware) by creating the folder as stated.  Just remember to delete the folder if you want to reinstate Voodoo.  I forgot to delete the folder and couldn't figure out why I didn't get Voodoo to install from the update.zip file - doh!

ROM Manager backups should work except that you can't currently restore them under JPK, you have to flash back to any 2.1 firmware and then restore.

Kies can be persuaded to install an update even if it doesn't recognise your current firmware, but there are no guarantees that this will work with the Froyo release.

How is that possible?

or even to reinstall a current firmware?

There is a quite detailed explanation on XDA about the Kies method (if numfarr is referring to the registry changes?) That was a bit past my technical expertise.

Otherwise if you do get a backup of your current firmware, flashing back to any old 2.1 is pretty straight forward (if you flashed your phone to froyo you'll understand the process.)

After close to 48 hours on Froyo on an NZ Galaxy, it's great. completely different phone, for the better! One issue with the Notification bar not functioning, but a reboot and that problem has not returned.

This method uses Odin to flash new firmware.  If you've already downloaded the JPK firmware from Aeyr's link on XDA, you'll see the instructions how to use Odin.  The firmware download includes the Odin v1.3 programme.

LOL
I'm going home to do mine tonight.

The only thing I picked up on as to the reason to taking a backup of /efs is the country code can change.

There's only 3 characters that need changing in the /efs nv_data.bin file.  And if I understand correctly, you make the changes to the NEW file where you replace the KOR (in the example on the XDA forum) back to the 3 characters you had prior to flashing to JPK.

I'm not sure if the CSC change matters.  But I think some have just flashed the CSC file separately afterwards.  Not sure where they got the CSC file from though.
